bad motor

Hey, guys.....

I'm sure this has been asked many times before. But when I did search nothing specific came up on this subject.

My question is

what are the signs and symtons that tell you..your motor is going bad?

Would the check engine warning light come on when that happened?

Thanks in advance for your input.

peace!

the check engine light could come on for many reasons, some not even directly related to your motor.

one of the more surefire ways to know if a rotary is going bad in the near future is by having a compression test done on it.

if you're engine is going bad you may notice loss of power, stalling, rough idle, "limp" mode, blinking cels, terrible mpg. of course all these things could be caused by other problems not related to the engine but they just as likely can be.

Well with my frst motor when my car was warmed up and driving up hill i couldnt go over 65 mph and no CEL dealer replaced motor. When the car was warmed up the apex seal wouldnt seal correctly cause spark knock. My second motor i was driving @4500 rpm's and the CEL was blinking then just died on me. Coils, wires and plugs were all new. The car just died right in the middle of the highway had to push it off to the side of the road.

The objective way is to go with the compression test. Actaully spending a couple hundred on a test every year or so is not a bad investment so you can monitor how the motor is aging. The subjective way is a nice stretch of open road without any law enforcement personnel in the vicinity. Run the car to top MPH every once in a while on the same stretch of road at similar environmental conditions and see if your loosing top end.

These are all really helpful tips, guys. I appreciate it!

I asked cuz I've been having that "rough idle" issue lately, at high temperature. It hasn't died on me yet. So I'm guessing it's not as bad at the moment. I haven't noticed any other symtons yet. No lost of power.. ....the car still runs great. No problem going uphill.
But it might be the beginning of something.....I'm guessing..

My car is 2004 and has about 39000 miles on it.

So far I have

- new intake manifold
- new plugs
- new battery
- new starter
- new gas cap
- two flashes done - one was done a year and a half ago and the other one just got done like a couple weeks ago.

Check engine warning light hasn't come on yet. It's just that idle issue so far.

I might go get the comp test done ....... or take it back to dealer in a few days....

I still have the warranty .....it runs til 03/09
