Does anyone know where to find the AC Drain hose on the firewall (engine) side. I have the service manual, but cant be sure where to look.

When I turn on my AC I get water leaking into the passenger footwell after about 10 min. I followed this water and it seems to be coming from the AC/Heater unit in the center of the dash. It is leaking out right where that unit connects with the Blower assembly. The only thing I can figure out is that the AC Drain is plugged up. I want to check it fro the other side of the firewall if possible before I take the dash out to look from the inside (looks like a PITA). Other than the water, the AC works just fine. I am pretty sure that this is water, and not coolant (no change in coolant level, only occurs when AC is on, put a white towel down and the water was clear did not stain towel).

What am I missing.....other than the location of the drain?

 

Its at the peak of the firewall...to the left of the oil filter..and in about 2 inches from the connector for the WBO2 wires

 

Thanks. Sounds like I can get to it from the top, with out lifting the car! Much easier than I thought.

 

Finally got time to look where you indicated. Worked like a charm. I was able to work some dirt/grime free and now the A/C is draining outside the car as it should. Big improvement over dripping on the passenger footwell. Thanks for the tip!

My RX8 has always got bad condensation, most of the time before i even get in the car and especially on the back windows! Do you think trying to get the grim out of the of the A/C drain would help sort this?

Also im a bit crap with cars so if anyone has any pictures of where the AC drain might be that would be a great help, as ive looked and i cant seem to find where it should be.

It could but I doubt it will totally fox your problem. I don't have a picture of the location and you can't see it. you just have to reach down to the area described in the the first few posts. You just have to reach down there and feel arond untill you feel something like a small soft rubber hose sticking out of the firewall. I just fiddled with that for a bit and I could feel some dirt and grime falling out. After that the AC drained like a champ.

 

oh ok. well i will give it another go at filling round for it hopefully i can get some grime out of it, fingers crossed.

Did you guys remove anything from the intake to do this?
Do you have baby sized hands?
Seriously- I can't get may hand down in that area due to the back of the black plastic intake making it too tight.

And I can hear the water IN the actual bird cage (fan).

 

Ok, I think I may have reached it (my my fingers). It is a very short flimsy tube.

 

Commonly referred to as "Duck Lips".
Can't really see them(it), but note in the red circle. There is stuff removed in this photo(the upper intake), but its at the peak of the firewall...to the left of the oil filter..and in about 2 inches from the connector for the WBO2 wires. It's circled red in this photo. It is behind the upper intake and between the oil filter (blue in picture) and the rear engine lift hook

You can't really see it without removing stuff, you just have to reach down to the area described. Reach down there and feel arond until you feel something like a small soft rubber hose sticking out of the firewall(Duck lips!). Just fiddle with that for a bit and you might feel some dirt and grime falling out.

Sometimes a little squirt of WD40 will loosen them up and then just bend them a little bit with your fingers until they free up.

 

That's what I found.
And after fiddling with it for a few, I did have some gunk on my fingers.

And ducks don't have lips fwiw. They have bills.

 

Guys, how do you take out the upper intake to get to this sun of a gun? I'm not too familiar with cars and all so a little help with some steps and perhaps some pics will be greatly appreciated.

 

you can reach this without taking the UIM off.. If you're looking at the firewall it's to the left of the oil filter.

 

Mazurfer, I can not thank you enough!!!! The picture really helped me locate the AC drain hose. It is a bit hard to reach if you don't have long arms so I would suggest using a toothbrush. Just hold the brush with the bristles pointing upwards and lightly brush the duck lips (rubber lips) at the end of the hose. The water will then begin to flow out immediately onto the ground,

Had water dripping in the passenger seat footwell and as the car had to go in for service I told Mazda to check it out. They said didn't have time that day but bring it again they will need it for a couple of days as they will have to take the dash off etc. to get to the AC and check it.

Started searching on the forum and found this thread. From the tips here satisfied myself it was just water.

Pics were a great help as I just wouldn't have known where to start looking. Although a mongrel to get to the AC drain hose managed to reach it and work it a bit. Lo and behold after a few seconds of this water started dripping out of it!

Been checking the footwell the last 3 days and bone dry. Ended up a simple and cost free fix.

Removing the oil filter makes it significantly easier and we used a nylon zip tie to clean the tube and water came running out. Thanks for this forum. We couldn't find the tube without this thread.

Hi been reading your threads about these duck lips, well I found mine, I can't see it but feels like I can put my finger in the firewall on one side of the hose , the other side of hose feels like octopus tenticals, im thinking I need a new hose thingy attachment to the firewall?. what part do I buy and would it be easy to install? I know the guys are gonna hit me for 100'ds dollars can u help?

 

Thanks to all of you for all your advice and pics. My Duck lips were near the area described but was actually on the roof of the transmission bay, in other words instead of facing the front of the car it was hanging. Dudes as soon as I rubbed it a few times the water started pouring out! so relieved. As we say in Puerto Rico Neta!
