Ya so ya
So I was messing round one day whatever anyway I wrecked my rx8 by hitting a curb with the rear right wheel. I messed that wheel up preaty bad and scrached up the front rim and side skirt peice. The driver side side airbags also deployed. So got the mechanical part of it fixed for the most part all I got left is the side skirt and airbags. So I called the dealer to find out bout the airbags and they said call a body shop. So I called a bodyshop and they said the dealer had to do it? So really first question is who can replace my airbags for me? 2 I had four ppl in the car when we hit and all four buckled in at the time and ever since that the light to remind you to buckle in the passengers remains on. I don't know if that's becouse the airbags are still deployed just tucked back in where they belong or whatever! Ok well thanks for help ahead of time!

well the buckle light is actually the airbag light. its right beside the tach needle, has a little man with a seatbelt and circle in front of his head?
which airbags did you deploy? i have all but steering wheel.
you can replace them yourself they are only a couple of bolts just make sure you disconnect the battery and you will also have to replace the control module and impact sensor.

a body shop should be able to fix this, but if you bent the wheel you're looking at an upwards of $5k worth of repairs. you may need to take it to a dealer to reset the code though after it's fixed.

the front two seat belt's (i think it's only the fronts) have explosive charges in them, generally when the airbag goes off the belts go off and snug you more securely (at least in 3's and 6's i cant recall if rx8s have it as well but i assume so) If thats the case theyll have to be replaced before the seatbelt light or airbag lights go off.
as for replacing the airbags you'll need to replace all the ones that blew as well as the SAS module. A bodyshop or dealership can both replace them, however only the dealer will be able to program the SAS module that will need to be installed so either way the car will eventually go to the dealer.
as for the airbags going off making a car considered totalled...thats completely not true, airbags are expensive but not THAT expensive. We just repaired a 95 mx6 which had both front airbags deploy, module and two bags was like $1800. insurance company gladly fixed it.

It was the side aribags that deployed only on the driver side. The curtin and the one on the side of the driver seat. I arelady have new rims put on it and all other repairs done execept the side skirt which is no biggie and the airbags.

The air bag canistars are getting cheaper. They were 500 bucks and may be down to 300.
Two air bags plus madules and labor is still under the scrap value. Insurance should cover it.
