Here's my update:

After reading the thread I have replaced the diff fluid in my car with Royal Purple. After about 50 miles it has seemed to quiet down. I will know for sure on my trek to Toronto this weekend....

Hey Guys,

I'm not sure if this is my issue or not. This is were the search engine gods have landed me however.

My car is a 02/04 build that apparently sat around in the lot until last Thursday. :D

With the cluth fully depressed coasting towards a stop, if I put the car in 1st or second, a very audible whine is heard and a pretty hefty "clunk" can be felt throughout the car. Repeat this while the car is completely stopped, and nothing. If the car is rolling at all, you feel and here it.

I can in my limited understanding of such things comprehend the syncro's in the trans and there releation to my current speed and selecting a particular gear.

I cannot ever recall this relationship resulting in a clunk and such a destinct whine before.

Any ideas ? Diff problem, something else, normal for a Rx-8?

I have a very eradict idle, the throughout bearing grinding noise and averaged 12.5 mpg while being very easy on the car for my first tank of gas.

I am going by the dealer tommorow for lunch to show them the grind, whine and clunk from the tranny. Unless you all confirm it's normal rx-8 behaviour. Thanks for any suggestions.

^ Same questions here. Is that 1st gear and 2nd gear whine normal? I always thought it was until the 2nd gear shifting gets harder to shift every week. I called for schedule of service tomorrow. Should I bring a bottle of Redline MT90 or wait for thei assessment?

Well for now I cancelled the visit. I made a error in calcaulating the mileage. The whine is loud, but the speeds I am hearing at are higher than I first thought. Although not in the 40 mph range and only in 1st and second so it doesn't sound like the diff problem.

What would appear to be a throughout bearing noise is reported elsewhere by others as normal, so far now, I'll just keep a ear on things.

I just had my 8 serviced with this whining drivetrain complaint together with oil change, and Mazda told service that it was normal. Btw, its "Throwout bearing".

The throwout bearing is not engaged unless the clutch is depressed so they fed you a line of BS.

Question

Xyntax was correcting my improper use of throughout instead of throw out and NOT claiming his dealer said that's what it was, I beleave. Thanks for that by the way.

He has the heavy clunk, like I do. Which the dealer told him is normal. If any BS was thrown around, it would be related to that.

Having less than 400 miles on my 8, I can't say if it's normal or not. My last car was Front Wheel Drive with a cable shifter. In fact my last 2 cars were FWD sticks. I never felt this clunk or heard the syncro's whining on those 2 cars, I was not sitting on the tranny or directly connected it to it either. I really hope my tranny just needs to break in, or is truely broken. The shifting action is very notchy for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Resulting in a clunk that you can be felt by the driver every time, if the car is rolling. In fact if I coast around with the clutch pressed all the way down, and move the shifter between first and second, I can make it go clunk, clunk, clunk etc ...over and over. That seems odd to me.

The dealer told him that's normal. Selecting second or first gear I have to be extremely careful and use a good amount of force to crash threw the notch. Several times I have had to make a second or third effort to get into third. I am willing to concede I don't have the best technique, this doesn't seem very confidence inspiring however. My only complaint so far, is the feel of shifting therefore.

I am the one with the hideous sound when I let the clutch out while the car is sitting still in nuetral. I always thought the throw out bearing was spinning when the clutch was depressed as well. My car makes noise when the clutch is out however. It was explained in another thread as the throw out bearing? So I just wanted to clear up that the only one who claimed a car was possibly having a throw out bearing was me. And not Xyntax's dealer.

my best bit of advice is the next time you go to the dealer, ask them if you can take the dealer demo out for a spin. If it has the same noises and shifting then I would say everything is normal. From my experiences there is alot of gear noise in first and second just because of the steep gears. The diff whine is only really audible at about 45mph with the tranny in neutral. As far as a clunk, with my windows open I can hear the tranny locking into gear. I wouldn't concider it anything out of the ordinary in a sports car. I've never had to force gears. Whatever happens, keep us posted.

I just got my 8 last week and I've had this problem for the past few days. I was gone for business most of last week so I only now have gotten to drive it around a bunch. I've probably got 350 miles on it so far but I noticed it from early on. Usually hits near 40 mph for me. Should I take it in to get serviced? Have the people who've gotten the work done noticed an improvement?

I wouldn't say it's very severe, it's just noticable when I'm around 40mph. Usually only lasts for 2 seconds and then it's find for the rest of the acceleration. I'm kind of hoping it'll go away as I break in my engine since it's so new. What do you mean by replacing the third member?

Zelig2 what gas are you using.. you may have bad gas or using to low of octane. as they ask for above 91. which if you use less then that you can experince some noise issues.

I've noticed something similar. I hear a wine as well from the tranny, but only in 6th gear while im on the highway, and only while accelerating. Is this something to worry about?

I also noticed a "gear whine" today. It happened when I was rolling to a stop with the clutch depressed and the car in first. As I slowed, the whine slowed. It sounded like I was running stright-cut gears (you race car folks know this sound well).

Is this the same whine that people are hearing from their diffs?

Silver, I also get that clunk sometimes when engaging first. Usually happens when I'm still rolling forward and select first.

bryrx804,
I'm using Shell's VPower high octane in my car. Been using it for nearly every fill up.

I'm going to ask the dealership this week about it.

Another differential gone?

I have had an increasing "rumble" noise from the rear end.

I thought it was the worn Potenzas and put on Eagle F1 (sound is the same).

Now I notice that the sound is significantly less when I make a sharp right turn and slightly louder when I make a left.

'04 with 44k mi.

Going for service Monday.

Turned out to be a bad rear wheel bearing.

Replaced under warranty.

I go to my dealer next week to have my "whining" looked into. I have an '05 AT, and I have experienced this "whining" since I took possession almost 2 months ago. It is getting worse however, and I now get the trembling on the shifter.

Wish me luck...

Seems you have some whining behind the steering wheel, too.

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Gear Whine Noise

Gear whining here too. Audible in 4th gear crusing and coasting in nuetral. I had this sound for so long cause I thought it was normal in an MT. ...New to it. I dont have a sound clip but it howls like -OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Oh well bringing it in this Monday and I hope they dont give me **** and just replace it.

Just my 2 Cents.

I have a new right engine mount, and a new rear passenger side wheel bearing on order for my whining!

I'm not so sure it is either of those that is causing the whining, but I'll let my dealer fix those things before I make my point known. If the noise goes away, great. If not, they'll be hearing from me again

9 months later and I still have the whining sound

To recap, it still happens at a certain RPM, and I am able to hold the RPM and maintain the whining sound.

Again, it kinda sounds like perhaps a belt on a metal flange. All the belts clear all protective metal under the hood though, and as best as I can tell, it sounds like it is coming from underneath the engine (perhaps the tranny?), and it does occur regardless of gear.

Here in the winter, it happens as frequently as in the warmer months. Also happens regardless of just starting, or after having been driven awhile.

I was hoping I would get used to it, but I have not.

My next step is writing a letter to mazda in hopes of getting some action. My car was just at the dealer for some routine work, and I again asked them to look into it. This time they blamed the K&N CAI. I was about to complain that this was happening well before I installed that, but I thought my letter will do my talking.

I'm dissapointed that the dealer would blame that when they know very well I brought this issue up before AND after installing it.

Anyways. We'll see how far a letter gets me.

Cheers,

Ed

I can hear this whining only when starting the car and depressing the clutch (let it). However if I have already started with any gear I can hear NO whining at all. It is only the very moment I leave the clutch petal in order to start. It is like a soft siren sound.

Thanks
