Okay, according to Trussville, there are two RX-8 oil filters, the old, larger style (1000) and the new smaller style:

For a 2005, I'm assuming the new, smaller filter is appropriate?

 

Atkins Rotary has OEM style filters. I think they are the same exact thing except re-labeled with atkins stuff.

They sell them on their site and on Ebay. Ebay is cheapest I believe, like 4 dollars or something per filter if you order in bulk.

 

I pesonally will use nothing but a Wix oil filter. You can get them at O'Reilly. They are built much better than stock. If filter price is an issue ask yourself how much a filter costs, or more appropriately the difference in price between a cheap and decent filter, and then compare it to the cost of 1 gallon of gas. Then figure out how often you change it. Cost really isn't an issue. Get a good filter. If it costs $8 vs $4, so what.

Oil filters can be confusing.

All I know is that FRAM is universally scorned.

 

Except for their Extreme super duper tough guard isn't entirely scorned. We're guards isn't that right? Yeah, we'rrre guarrrrrrds, guarrrrrrrrrrrds.

Yeah RG Wix are great filters. I think Amsoil has their filter made by them and recommends them for their 24,000 or once a year change with Series 2000 Amsoil.

Napa carries Wix.

 

I tried K&N Filters, its around 9 bucks each (10 bucks with shipping if I buy alot)

but for now Im sticking with OEM. Maybe I will go back to K&N or Wix next time. (I change my crap around 1.5K, so its fast)

 

I'll agree with that. There is a flat piece kind of like a plate inside the oil filter that seals one side (dirty) off from the other (clean). In the Wix filter and many others it is metal. In the Fram filters it is cardboard! What happens to cardboard when it gets wet, oily, etc and how wel would it seal? I'm not putting that on my engine.

Just another reason I love this forum! Buddy of mine was changing his oil recently and couldn't stop telling me how GREAT Fram filters are...

I have been getting the Black OEM Mazda ones from Trussville, fast shipping and I have not had any problems. I was not aware that there was a size difference, are the ones for the 7's smaller???

 

I seem to recall that some of the very early (2003) OEM filters were a little bigger and then they reduced the size. When I bought my first set of filters and cap-wrench, the wrench was designed to fit both the "old" and "new" size.

 

currently, Mazda uses the same oil filter for all pre-MZR 4cyl engines and all rotary engines...

 

I'm going with either a Wix or a Purolator.

They sell the Wix as a 'NAPA Gold' at NAPA auto parts.

They sell the purolators as 'Totalgrip' at Advance Auto Parts.

On the issue of the Mazda OEM filter, I've read that many manufacturers have gone with the smaller, shorter filter for unexplained reasons, but skeptics claim it's to cut costs and reduce longevity - shorter, smaller canister = smaller filter, less surface area, shorter life.

 

Here is a nice 3rd party test of many of the different filters out there. It will show you how to identify what type of filter you have based on it's construction. There are fewer manufacturers of filters than there are name brands so now you'll know who's is who's. It will also show you detailed breakdowns of how much filter area they have and what everything is made of. There is more than 1 good filter obviously. I just prefer the Wix. It is easy for me to get. Pay attention to the build quality of the Fram!

I bought a NAPA Gold, which is the high end WIX.

I am a little pissed though, because it was 8 bucks and change, and I am a cheap bastard.

 

I got myself some Wix Filter for around 6.50 each yesterday.

Will change it today .... see what happesn (Castrol Full Synth this time)
