Question What is your Oil Use and gas

The latest Wheels magazine has an article on an RX8 that this magazine had in its loan fleet. It is quoted as using 2 litres (3.5pints) of oil in 4500kms (2800 miles)...seems rather excessive..anyone having similar oil usage? They also had an overall fuel economy of 14litres/100kms
Convert from litres/100km into miles/gallon (US)
235 ÷ litres / 100km = mpg (US)
eg. 235 ÷ 14L/100kms = 16.78mpg(US)

What do you get overall? 9100RPM
Truemagellan this is a serious thread.

Used 1 quart in my first 1500 miles. Consistently 17.5-18.5 mpg on 91 octane premium.

I get 17L per 100km and my 8 consumes 1-1.5L of Rotary Oil every 5000kms

I've added about 1 quart, since getting the car, and putting 2100+ miles on the engine. I've been keeping a mileage log, which is accurate within one or two tank-fuls (I've forgotten to add to the chart on occasion)...Average consumption is: 17.53mpg, with a high of 20.5, and a low of 15.5. Here's a picture of the numbers: (note attached)

I have 6500 miles on my car and have used 1 quart of oil about every 1500 miles. My fuel mileage has been pretty consistant at 18mpg. I ran an experiment to see how good I could get the fuel mileage. I never shifted past 3500rpm and I got 19.5mpg. Then I rode it hard for the next tank full and got 17mpg.

I have about 10,000 miles on my RX-8. I've been adding 1 quart of oil every 2,500 miles. Maybe my car is an anomaly, but I'm not seeing the high oil consumption that a lot of other owners see. I religiously check my oil every 500 miles.

Mileage has been averaging 19.5 mpg. That's with maybe 85% highway driving.

excessive oil consumption and poor gas milage seems to be the norm for the rx-8,
it's twice as high as a RX-7.

oil 1 quart per 1,500 miles and fuel 15 m.p.g. in town and just over 20 highway
all with NORMAL DRIVING(NOT SPEEDING OR HIGH RIVS)

By 'its' you mean 'oil consumption (is twice as high)'?

Perhaps your statement should read "excessive oil consumption and poor gas mileage seems to be the norm for my rx8". There are plenty of people, as you can see, who fare much better than you - for whatever reason.

In 9500 miles, have done 2 oil changes and have added just 1 quart sometime after each of the changes. It's down a quart right now so I will change rather than add. Planned to always change the oil between 3500 - 4500 miles and it is working out that I change the oil, then miles later (haven't kept track) I add a quart and the second time it needs a quart, I change it. So I suppose that works out to approximately 1 quart every 2500 miles.

Gas mileage averages between 18- 20 mpg with occasional drops to 14 - 15 or less frequent bumps up to 22 - 23.

20K miles uses (and has from day-one) 1 qt per 2000 miles,
I use Castrol GTX 5-20.
Solid 18 mpg - 90% city driving on Citgo 89 octane.

It's karma. Sandia8 likes to troll here and be an *** - therefore his RX-8 uses more oil and fuel than everybody elses! :p

Thumbs up gas/oil consumption

I consistently get just over 19 mpg for everyday driving and 21 on all highway trips. This is up from about 16-17 mpg during the frist 6,000 miles. I also had to add a couple of quarts of oil during the first 5-6,000 miles but haven't needed any between oil changes since. I'm changing every 5000 and the car is at about 23,000 now.

1-1.5 Qts of Castrol GTX 5-W20 every 1,500 miles (depends on driving habits).

93 Octane fuel only:

14 MPG city (as low as 10 depending on driving habits - got 12.76 mpg on my last fill up but I had alot of idle time on there).
21-23 MPG highway (well over the mystical 3,750 rpm mark - I typically cruise 80-90 mph).

My car currently has 15,600 miles on it with oil changes every 3,000 miles.

With all of that said I do believe my car is capable of a couple more mpg in city driving as well as highway but I drive my car fairly hard/fast and am willing to pay a bit extra in fuel and oil for the pleasure.

Change every 3000K

At most I'm a little less than a qt down on change- that is using Castrol 5/20 and driving very hard. I think it's a small price to pay- for how much fun I'm getting out of this vehicle- Maybe it does burn a little more then a then old-fashioned piston type- and I'm not sure that's even true, but the mid engine- 50/50 wheight-and handling like on RAILS- makes up for alot !! Anyone who does not belive this-has not really DRIVEN an 8.

I've got 7,000 miles on my 04 6-speed and NEVER had to ad an ounce of oil. Funny thing is I get only 13-14 miles per gallon and rarely run the car hard but, also 5% highway miles.I think it's the stop and go of So.Fl.

I add 1 quart of Valvoline every 1750 miles. Consistently 17.5-18.5 mpg on 93 octane premium. Question, does the brand of the oil really matter? (Castrol, Valvoline, Mobile, etc.)

My mileage is so bad that several Saudi Sheiks have called to thank me personally for my business. One of him told me that business is so good this year that he's been able to feed all of his wives steak every night.

I get 14-16 in the city, and that's really no highway at all. I have gotten 21-22 on highway trips, driving at 70-80+ MPH.

The car uses oil in consistently, sometimes, its a quart in 1500 miles, and sometimes, no oil in 1500 miles. I think it does worse on the highway with oil.

I use a mix of gas (about 2 or 3 tanks at 87 and 1 tank at 93. My gas milage has been tracked for over 18.3K miles now. My average sticks around 18mpg with about 60 miles driving a day! I have posted the data previously and could repost the new data now if interested!

I add 1 qt. every 1500. i guess i shouldent say EVERY considering i only have just under 3,000 miles on it. but at the 1,500 mark i had to add 1 qt. and now i am almost 1 qt low.

fuel milage sucks. have not accually tested it, but it sucks!

hey does anyone know how far you can go with the fuel light on. i personally last night went to the gas station when the light had just turned on about 5 min. earlyer and filled up. it only took 13.5 gal. 16 gal tank means i still had 2.5 galons in the car.
anyone else have simular results?

P.S. broke Apex seal, is that a picture of you in the car?

I use approx 1 qt oil every 2,500 miles.
Significantly less if all highway driving.

Attached is a screen shot of a Excel chart of my MPG.

Horizontal axis is the odometer.
Vertical is MPG.

Green plots are fill-ups after only highway driving.
Red plots are fill-ups after only city driving.
Amber plots were a mixture highway/city - I now always fill up before I anticipate changing modes.

My average highway MPG appears to have been continually trending up since the M-flash.

-Jeff

9k miles on the car, put in 3 quarts of oil so far. First one in first month before I got the M flash.

Most of the time I'll get about 13 mpg city driving. Though on my last trip to Kentucky I drove 72mph most of the way and got 21.7 mpg. (BTW 72mph is 6th gear @ 3500ish rpm).

about 1 quart every 2500 miles, 18 with 93 octane, 50/50 driving about 19.5 with 89 octane, 50/50 driving, and around 22 with either octane on the highway 75-95 mph. I can't complain. I take it to redline 2-3 times per day.
