Just got my RX8 and first time owner. Had full service b4 i picked it up and have since topped up with Mobil 1 5w30 oil. A guy i know works for Mazda and reckons shouldnt use any thing but Dexelia Ultra5w30. If I want to go start using this is it advisable to do a whole oil change or can I just start topping up with dexilia?

Have read so many threads on this and just a little confused....!

Oil is a pretty driver specific decision. Since we don't have a large amount of engines to crack open at 100,000 + miles to see if one oil is better than another its mostly been decided by preference.

I've not used the Dexelia oil myself and didn't know it existed for quite some time. I used Castrol for the first 6,000 miles and then switchd to Royal Purple full synthetic and have 35,000 miles on the origional engine.

I'm looking to switch to the Idemitsu Racing Engine Oil on my next oil change. I haven't been convinced with Royal Purple and it seems like after 3,000 miles the oil is pretty spent.

If you are interested in using just Dexelia I would wait until your first oil change and then start using it at that point. Topping off the oil with Mobile 1 or Dexelia shouldn't cause any issues.

There have been people from Mazda who have gone one way or another with various types of oils and people here use all different types of brands. It comes down to who'se advice you trust.

There are so many opinions and answers because it's not a critical choice. As long as you use a name brand 5w20 or 5w30, API SL or better, you won't go wrong. (People who used other weights don't seem to have gone wrong, either.)

The toughest decisions to make are ones where there are lots of correct answers.

FWIW - there are no compatibility issues with mixing different brands. Also, when you change the oil on an 8, you only get about 60% of the total oil out, so if you wait for a change before switching brands you're still mixing. So feel free to start using your choice for top-offs.

Thanks - Think I will just order in bulk of Dexelia and start using as of now as this is what the Mazda dealership in the UK recommend.

Bit of panic set in thinking I was gonna mess my engine up before I got started!!
