What not to do when ............

You buy a new reman from Mazda. So I had a customer bring a new reman in from Mazda that he had stored in a barn for 6 months while waiting to put it in the car.

He started to turn it over by hand and heard a crunch. Which is not what you want to hear, obviously. So he brought it to me and guess what we found??

None other than a huge Dirt Dobber nest in the rear rotor housing. It was a new experience for me lets just say that. Pics below.

Wow!

That's...special?

I take it that is a type of insect? I know of a mud dauber, so I'm guessing it's the same thing or a slight variant.

Gotta love people that store engines without plugging up any of the orifices.

Eh, I wouldn't say that. A point of carelessness he certainly has to pay for. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't do it again

No, no I wouldn't

You will understand better the more you hang around B@W. My job inherently deals with the lesser adjectives of human nature

+1.

Sucks for the guy to have to pay to have the rebuilt engine torn down and rebuilt.
But, at least he will have a great idea of the condition of his engine before it is ever installed in his car.

BC.

actually it is dumb. condensation can also get into the engine just as easily as insects/small animals and tear things up from the inside out. always at least attempt to seal up an engine while storing it..

The same thing. Being from Oklahoma helps me to make it a little more redneck.

This particular motor has new main and rotor bearings, new rotor housings, and other than the insects that were living inside the motor it was a nice motor. Had the normal larger tolerances on the side seals than what I use but it would have served its purpose well. No complaints on the build quality of this particular reman from Mazda. Which is something I have not been able to say in a long time.

We all learn the hard way sometimes. I am glad no one follows me around every day with a camera. I would look like a fool alot.

The ports were covered, but with painters tape. Obviously that will not keep out pesky insects and is not recommended for sealing up a motor for storage. I will bet you this mistake is not make again by him.

what are you talking about? I only see the engine, the rotor housing looks new and the build is pretty clean ...

lol seriously, damn I would cry if I were him, the engine I rebuild it's still on my Engine stand ... that should keep all small animals away

The Mazda Rebuild is not as bad as it sounds, hmm, maybe I should buy one right now before they jack their prices up ... but I need a core to return hmmm ...
