DYI: Finding/Pushing the trunk release button

This is the best and easiest method I've found to find and push the trunk release button on the inside of vehile (not the one on the key fob ;) )

This DYI starts assuming you are sitting in the dirvers seat.

1. Take your left hand and turn your palm up.
2. Reach down the left side of the steering column.
3. With your middle finger and one to the right (not you index finger) feel for the hood release (usually very easy to find.)
4. Once you find the hood latch (release) keep your hand there and stick out your thumb as though you were hitchhiking.
5.Rotate your left hand towards the door in a semi circle arcing towards the front of the car.
6. At this point your thumb will be resting on the trunk realease button.
7. PUSH IT.

Hope this helps...
If all works out you can do this with your eyes closed :)

this has to be a joke

downshift 05-26-2004 07:45 PM

Can you post pictures? I can't visualize it. :p

zzum-zum 05-26-2004 07:51 PM

It might be a joke, but that thing is hard to find!

loco4rx8 05-26-2004 09:24 PM

It's a new feature. Stealth trunk release. Mazda thought the kids would find it "phat."

poolsidenaz 05-26-2004 09:35 PM

LMFAO! Good stuff :D

Nubo 05-27-2004 12:38 AM

The buttton is hard to find. I pretty much just use the fob. Not a bad idea to develop "muscle memory" for where it is.

thew 05-27-2004 12:39 AM

Put some hair around it !!! then youll find it.

Tamas 05-27-2004 12:50 AM

I think the reason for the button being so hidden is because they did not want people hitting it accidentally. That's because originally, the Trunk Monkey was supposed to be a standard feature on all RX-8's :D

spaceman 05-27-2004 12:51 AM

Phew!

LMFAO!!:D

Xyntax 05-27-2004 01:14 AM

Yeah, it isn't the best thing to operate on our RX-8. Good tip! I actually do the same thing and I just noticed it now that you mentioned the method.

FONZIE 05-27-2004 08:52 AM

When I first got my 8 and I was showing it to my roommates, I couldn't find the trunk release for a full minute. I looked like a retard:(

flatso 05-27-2004 09:10 AM

Funny I was just thinking if I locked my keys in the trunk how would I get them out. I did not know there was a trunk release from inside. Have to look tonight to see if I can find this hidden button.

MyRxBad 05-27-2004 09:43 AM

Maybe I should have specified, Finding it without actually looking. :D lol

BoxerGT2.5 05-27-2004 10:24 AM

I have a midget in the trunk that pulls the inside release when I honk the horn twice. Seems to work pretty good I think...:)

DisneyDestroyer 05-27-2004 01:50 PM

Plez describe dis new alarm you keep referin to? Sounds like you don't be having a stock Mazda RX-8 alarm den?

Tinkerer 05-28-2004 02:48 PM

That was waaaay too funny. I'm nearly in tears. It's probably so funny cause I've had trouble finding the damn thing -- and yes you start to feel retarded when you just reach inside and down and can't find it!

Man, maybe someone could do a diy post for an illuminated switch with rotary shaped led's or something. I have to go find a tissue!

d0va 05-29-2004 06:02 PM

it took me almost 6 months to find the trunk release " the funny part I thought the switch in the glove compartment was the trunk release almost took the car to the dealership" and like a month ago I found this small compartment on the way to the trunk release button....what is it for.... ? any idea

d0va, you put stuff in it. Like maybe coins or ... whatever.

d0va 05-29-2004 11:00 PM

it looks like if you closed it because of the angle things would fall off.... anyone has found other use to it....

jinani4eva 05-31-2004 03:00 AM

funny, really funny. cuz i kinda asked a couple of days ago about this opening the tinny wannabe trunk while the engine is warming up.

Relax guys, I found a way (accidentally) to get the fob trunk release to work with the key in the ignition. See this DIY thread here...

Cool mate, but we've discovered the trunk release button.

So who's gonna be the first to lock their car with the keys in the ignition?

You can easily do that with this mod if you use the door switch to lock the car, so unless you're in the habit of using your fob to lock the car - think twice about doing this mod.

The "sticky" method mentioned in your thread was great. :D

cheers,
rx8cited

Gomez 06-09-2004 11:03 PM

Now that you mention it, I suppose that you can lock lock the car without using the remote.......I haven't done that in five years!!!!

Kel Rx8 06-10-2004 12:54 AM

man
i did this while reading it
im a loser for doing it
i think i will just hit the dash (left side)
and touch like the blind do cause i know its there.
(no disrespect to blind)

alphapenguin 06-10-2004 10:03 AM

that sucker is annoyingly hard to find. I think I scratched up the area around the button already with all those failed attempts to press it.

Yanje 06-10-2004 12:01 PM

lol, i sent my sister to school with the 8 and i couldnt find the trunk release button (her school bag is in the trunk). i searched for about 2-3 minutes, even searched the compartment on the passenger side dash... and i made the mistake of pressing the button. so i tried to use the button on the remote... and it doesn't work.

my sister was like shouting at me and almost want to kill me.... then i found the trunk release button, and pressed it.... guess what, nofin happens. a memory flash back of reading the manual.... i realised i had disabled the trunk release. so yeh, wasnt until 5 mins later did my sis managed to get her school bag out :p ..... and boi, that was embarasing.

Tried it today....you can't lock the car with the keys in the ignition. Unless you use another key or remote. I couldn't lock the car using the lock button on the door....as soon as you push it, it pops out again.....

Hi Gomez,
When you did this test, which ignition switch position was the key at - LOCK, ACC, or ON?

Would you mind trying it with key in LOCK position if you did not do that already?

cheers,
rx8cited

Gomez 06-12-2004 03:09 AM

How I love an experiment...!!! Okay, the door would not lock in Acc, Lock, or On positions......Nor would the door lock with the key removed from the ignition...ie, in my pocket....!

So, I think you're safe....you can't lock the keys in the car...the passenger door will lock, not the drivers....

Regards, Gomez.
