turning the rx8 off

i recently bought my 2006 rx-8 from a Mazda dealer. when i bought it they told me that i need to rev the engine up to about 4-5 thousand rpm and turn it off while it is there. i've looked everywhere for the answer to the problem. i've heard it has to do the engine flooding, but i dont know. HELP ME!!!

huuu, you do not have to rev it up to shut off just for everyday, you may want to if your moving the car when its cold.

starting car moving it in the drive way then turning it off is the only time you may want to do that

Your fuel injectors turns off exactly when you turn the key to the off position. In keeping the RPMs there while turning off the ignition, the OMP is still working and sucking in air but there's no gas. Your seals will be lubricated (good for your apex seals) and there's no gas in the engine, this prevents flooding, though not at a 100%. I move my car around alot in the morning, I do this all the time (about 3-5 times a week) and never flooded it.

What the dealer told you is bunk. It's a serious garbling of needing to rev to 3K before shutting down if you warmed the car by idling instead of driving.

Did you get the quick start guide with your car? If not, sign up in the owner's area of mazdausa.com and download it. That describes the rev-before-shutdown thing. It's not something you'd normally need to do.

Yep, only for "cold" shutdowns. Rev to 3K, hold for 10 seconds then turn off key while still pressing pedal. As the rotor spins down with injectors off, it will act to purge any raw fuel from the engine.

As with most things that are repeated by word of mouth, exaggeration creeps in and so the story becomes grander. Cold shutdown becomes all shutdowns. Rev to 3k becomes rev to 4000, 5000, I've seen 6000 too. I'm sure someone somewhere has been told to redline the thing before shutdown

Lots of changes have made the chance of flooding much less than it was in early 2004, but I still do the 3K rev for cold shutdowns. It's easy enough to do and cold shutdowns are fairly rare.

The Mazda DVD I have (and manual) actually advise that you rev to 3k for 10 seconds and then let it fall to idle before turning the key off. And yes, only on 'short trips', where the engine hasn't had a chance to warm to operating temperature.

Try not to do "cold shutdowns". Let it warm up fully before shutting down. Then you won't have to worry about whether or not the reving theory works or not.
