Transmission whine

Hey guys, This is my first post to this site, but I"ve been following it since before I took delivery of my Titanium Grey 6 speed on 26 Aug 03. Are you 6 speed owners experincing a whine from your tranny when not under acceleration? TIA

I notice a strange noise in the first minute after starting up the car while it is idling. It could be described as whining.

I try to ignore it hoping that it is ok :-|

Is this in all cases not under acceleration? ie, clutch engaged/disengaged? In every gear?

If it's especially louder in lower gears like 1st or 2nd and it's what you hear when you're slowing down with the clutch in, and it stops when you put the shifter into neutral - then I believe this is a normal sound - at least all the manual cars I've ever driven you could hear the gearbox whine when you were decellerating in-gear with the clutch depressed....

If you're getting a whine in other circumstances, it could be something to worry about.

Simon.

I just had mine in the shop for this and they ordered a new ring and pinion set for the rear end. It would whine when backing off the throttle at approx 46 mph. Loud as hell and pisses me off. Oh well it'll finally be fixed in a week or so.

Thanks for the replies. I think what I'm hearing is normal for a manual transmission. It has been a while since I have driven a manual. You guys know how it is, new car, hear something that you have'nt paid attention to and start to wonder. Just putting the question out to get a feel of what everyone else thinks.

Believe it or not, mine had a lot of tranny noise... or what I thought was tranny noise, until I hit 4000 miles. I do not hear it that much now, but when I drive my wife's 8, (2600miles) I hear it again.

Go figure.....

I have the same noise when slowing down in gears, especially 6th gear.... Anything to worry about? (The gearbox works like a charm) Could an oil change help?

This is different than the "gear rollover" that you hear when in neutral with clutch out.

I have the whine too. Especially noticable after installing the AFE short shifter. I think it is "normal" to some degree just b/c of how the gears are cut. The whine was considerably deminished after I changed to RP tranny fluid, but after about 100-200 miles the whine is back.

If you start to notice is gets worse I might bring it in to the dealer

Our transmission syncros are notorious for "whining". This is somewhat normal, unless it is really loud - then may be badly worn syncros - which means rebuild or replacement.

If syncros are not shot, replacing trans fluid with a quality synthetic will reduce whine. I prefer BG Syncroshift II as it totally eliminated my trans whine (when new right off the lot) and makes it shift much, much smoother.

Others here also like RP MaxGear 75W90 and Redline MT90. Both seem to reduce whine some and there are varying opinions on the shifting improvement with RP seeming to be better in that category between the two.
