Transmission Troubles

I was in the car the other day, and I missed second gear, put it in gear and kept going. When I stopped afterwards, the car would not go into 1st or second gear. I rolled the car in 3rd gear and then was able to put it into 1st, but it didn't feel right shifting from 1st to 2nd. I stopped to investigate, and the car would not go into or out of 1st with the car off. I let the car sit for a couple of hours, and took it out again, and when cool, it shifted smooth as butter, but when it warmed up it was doing the same thing.

I am going to the dealer tomorrow, but does anyone here have a clue as to what is going on? I am by no means a transmission expert, but I do not understand this. Thanks for any help

Search "Second Gear" and see what you find. It could be the synchro or the clutch bracket.

I have already read most of the threads that I found there. The threads listed with the syncro problems talk about not going into gear at certain rpms. Mine won't go into 1st or second at all. And the biggest confusion to me is that it won't go in or out of gear (1st or 2nd) even when the car is off.

Isnt that obvious ? Yes your tranny has a problem ?

do you even need to ask us what is it ? does it even matter ?

Just take it in tell them to fix it. oh ask for a new tranny is better, I dont really trust Mazda tech's(notice my signature) skills in replacing tranny parts.

So I talked to the dealership and they said it was both the transmission and the clutch. I will be fighting for a new transmission (thanks nycgps) and royal purple. I'm also looking into a clutch and flywheel that won't void the warrenty. I'm going down to take a look at it soon.

I have been fighting with the dealership about my situation. They quoted me the clutch parts at $943. I thought this was pretty high, so I took the parts listing that they gave me and called another dealership. The other dealership are now selling me the parts at $621. I still don't have word on whether the transmission will be rebuilt or if I'll get a new one.

most of the price listed on Mazdatrix are higher than other vendors.

if you just need stock stuff, onlinemazdaparts and Rosethnal(both forum vendor) might be able to do better price than your local dealer.

but I suggest you to go with aftermarket FW/Clutch, they cant void ur warranty for it, cuz they have to prove that the parts is the cause of failure (which is close to impossible, hell you can even blame Mazda's parts for your part's failure, but thats another issue)

943 for what? just clutch clutch and pressure plate?

but even with another stock FW thats still a rip off. if its with labor thats another story.

get aftermarket or Mazdaspeed ones.

I was trying to give him a ballpark figure of what the parts really sell for. There'll always be someone cheaper.
Oh, and I no longer buy stuff from Rosenthal.

eblvabch: any update?

Clutch, pressure plate, bearings, and some other stuff. I don't have the figures in front of me, when I do, I'll post, with both dealers prices.

I was looking at clutch parts all over the place, and it's not the dealer that stopped me, but my signifigant other.

Here is the list of parts that was ordered for my clutch. I have part numbers, description, list price, then net price. Hopefully this will give someone else ammunition if they need to replace a clutch and think they are getting screwed. I don't think of these as low prices, but fair.

N318-16-460C Disc, Clutch 236.52 197.14
N318-16-410B Cover, Clutch 296.01 246.73
FE62-16-510C Clutch Rel 47.78 33.65
N326-11-D03 Bearing, NE 18.67 9.23
1881-11-404A Seal Oil 6.11 2.25
Y611-17-242 Sleeve Clutch 129.77 102.51

Total Price I paid-621.09

Going on 4 weeks and I still don't have my car. I'm going through withdrawals. They got everything in, and went through the gears, and then it wouldn't go into gear anymore. They have someone coming in to take a look at it from outside the dealership, but probably not untill monday. Who knows when it will actually be fixed. If anyone is having transmission problems, fight for a new transmission, don't let the dealership rebuild it.

Im dare to say most dealerships dont have the *skills* to rebuild anything serious. all they can do is *replace* parts. Sure they can replace the whole transmission. Rebuild them ? Thats out of question.

Fight for a new Tranny, and you should demand some free stuff because 4 weeks is already too long.
