I've read several threads on the benefits of changing the Trans and Diff oils (Red Line lubes seem to be the way to go). One thing I didn't see was any mention of wether the transmission gets quieter in its operation. I have the much maligned rollover noise at idle in neutral, and I understand the issues/controversy there. But, I also have a lot of gear noise in 5th and to a lesser extent in 6th at low rpms (2.5 to 3K rpm cruise). The car is new at this point ( ~550miles) and I'll probably change the trans and diff oils around the first engine oil change.

Can I expect any benefit in noise reduction?

THE NOISE YOU HEAR IN NEUTRAL IS NOT THE RELEASE (THROW-OUT) BEARING !!!

A bad TB will only make noise with the clutch DISENGAGED - ie, with the pedal depressed.

Please people, stop with this already.

Some customers may complain of a whirring noise from the transmission while at idle N in neutral. The noise may also be described as a light rattling when the AC compressor cycles on. This noise is normal N no repairs should be made. Confirm the gear rollover noise by depressing the clutch pedal, the noise should be eliminated. Compare noise to another vehicle to verify this is a normal characteristic. 1. No repairs should be attempted on vehicles with gear rollover noise.

This noise has been atributed to the TB over and over again despite that TSB being a sticky elsewhere in this forum.

 

As I mentioned...I am aware of the rollover noise TSB. I was specifically asking about excessive gear noise in 5th/6th at low RPM's... as in cruising down the highway at 60Mph in 6th gear. I get alot of annoying transmission noise...similar to the rollover whirring, but loud enough to be heard over the road noise. Its mildly annoying.

Just wondering if, post break in period, it would be worth going to the synthetic lubes for this reason (other reasons being acknowledged).

Umm, different thread....

 

Somebody that has the service manual should post a pic of the throwout bearing and clutch assy. A lot of people who have never changed a clutch themselves probably don't have a clue about pressure plates and throwout bearings. One post I read was actually talking about the throwout bearing being inside the transmission case. Maybe I'll be able to throw up a pic if I ever receive my service manual from ebay.

he said he was switching to synth fluids, so i reminded him to keep using dino dung for oil.

 

The transmission and the bell housing are integrated. I guess if you explode a clutch you may need a whole new tranny. I know I'm showing my age but my track experience came from running a 67 chevelle with a punched out small block. I know that back then running at Englishtown for certain classes you were required to run a blow proof bell housing and a drive shaft loop to prevent broken components from entering the car.

 

I switched both the trans and diff to synth.

I did not notice any noise reduction, but my trans was not very noisy to begin with. I just have the slight whirring at idle, no "gear" noise before or after the trans and diff oil change.

I did notice smoother shifting and have seen about a .3 mpg average jump on the last 3 tanks of fuel since the change. MPG change could be the change to summer fuel though, it's too early to tell.
