could have sworn there was already a thread on this...but a search yielded nothing like i thought it would.

anyone else's car ticks when turning? it sounds like a ticking coming from the front outside wheel, so if i were making a right, the driver front wheel will tick and if i make a left, the passenger front wheel will tick. it doesn't seem to do it first thing in the morning, but then after a block or two, i hear ticking when i turn. usually only in turns as sharp as rounding a corner, as opposed to like a freeway interchange.

it's starting to really annoy me and just does not sound right, it makes no difference if i have dsc on, off, or perm off. anyhow, i just wanted to get a feel for others' experiences before i take it in to get it looked at.

edit- oh i forgot to mention the ticking sound, almost sounds like a spark too, hard to tell really while the car is in motion with all the road noise and all, but it could be just thin metal tapping against something or even a spark, im thoroughly stumped on what its coming from.

Yes, I've been told mine ticks - I haven't heard it myself, but several spectators at my last autocross commented on it.

No, I'm not aware of any positive diagnosis yet.

To save you time here is the answer:

"I have this exact same problem. What happens, is after driving approxamatly 10 minutes (after warmup), turn in a fairly tight circle 3-5 times IN EITHER DIRECTION ! It does it. I finallly got the dealership to fix it at 500 miles. The mechanic said "noise due to insufficient torque on front wheel studs. Applied anti-sieze compound, torqued to spec". This fixed my problem for now. I don't know how long the fix will last though. I also have noticed an unusually large amount of dust on the wheels (the wheel being ground down by moving around). I hope the damage to the wheels isn't bad."

While that may be an answer, I'm dubious that it's the answer. I had removed and refitted my wheels the night before the aforementioned autocross, and torqued the lugnuts to 85ft-lb apiece. I further checked them as part of my pre-event checklist that morning, so I don't believe that insufficient lug torque was the problem in my case.

It's the wheel to rotor hub "slip-stick" noise. Take some 100 grit sand paper to the rotor & back of the wheel, where they contact each other. Spray off residue & retorque wheels -80-85 lb ft.

as much as i'm a DIY kinda guy, im gonna stick to principle on this one and make mazda fix it. thanks for the responses, searching for ticking didn't yield anything but now that i find out everyone else calls it "clicking" mrrrrrr.

I also have the clicking. It's very pronounced but on right turns only, and then, only under load. Anybody figure out what we can do about this? I really don't wanna take it to the dealer. John Hine has been nothing but a bunch of ****-nuts so far.

so i picked it up today, the ticking is gone. the service manager at galpin, scott (who is freakin fabulous by the way) said it was something to do with rust that accumulated during shipping on the boat behind/around the brakepads or something to that effect, nothing about wheel studs for me.

Thanks for the help in the forum - I took my car back to the dealer today (I've had it a week - 440 miles on the clock) after hearing the clicking on sharpish (slowish) turns after driving for about 30 mins.

The problem is apparently fixed although I won't be able to verify this until tomorrow. The dealer wrote the following on my invoice:

"Cust states that vehicle makes clicking noise in frt when turning.

GQ tightened blots on both frt hubs and final test drive OK".

I'll let you know if the problem is gone. The work was done at Sunnyvale Mazda.

I did a U-turn yesteday in my car (~3500 miles on odo) and noticed a new click sound from the front wheel.

The lug nuts were indeed a little loose and tightening them up did the trick.

Interestingly enough I had to borrow a friends tire iron (I was not at home) because there's not on in the car, probably because there's no spare, so why would you need one?

Anyhow - just something for those who haven't experiecned this yet it might be worth the time taking a look at the lug nut torque.

I think I out thunk myself with the logical conclusion of no-spare=no-wrench and didn't actually spend a whole bunch of time looking.

hey guys had that same ticking noise on sharpish turns also. Took it to Mazda and was fixed. Apparently excess rust/corrosion protection on discs and hubs. after four days of the 8 being back, noise is back. Must take it back to Mazda...

What you guys think on their explanation??

I say get your lug nut wrench and make sure the wheel nuts are not loose...

that's what they said my problem was too when i took it in, but the noise has not returned and i've gone through a couple canyon runs since so...it's not like i've been mostly driving straight.

I don't think this clicking is generated by rust or particles on the discs - it definitely sounds like metal hitting metal to me (assuming your clicking is the same as my clicking). I'd suggest to the dealer to check the lug nuts, can't hurt...

My friend forgot to tighten mine on my last car once and it sounded like someone was hitting my fender with a hammer and when I got home and touched one lug it fell off

I took mine in last Monday. The tech said he was able to replicate the noise and "cleaned contact rotor surface" and the noise went away.

Its funny I was autocrossing today and one of the course worker told me that my car was clicking too. I just checked my lug nuts and they are fine.

lugnuts are okay... will go back to dealer tomorrow. I initially thought it was dealer bs too. To make matters worse I can now hear it in reverse too. Guess explanations (logical ones) are due...thanks anyhows.

This is an oldie, but is anyone else still having this problem. I just noticed mine doing the same last night while doing right hand long radius corner at higher speed, and radio is off. I have noticed the ticking sound. I will check the to torque, and see if it fixes the problem. Only thing changed that I rotated my tires, so the torque theory sounds reasonable. If anyone has discovered another fix, please share
