Tar under the car

What's the tar they use under the car to protect it from rusting and where can I find some? I ran over an object (not sure what it was) and it made a very deep scratch exposing the metal.

It is called Undercoating. You should be able to find some in an aerosol can to patch over the scratch. Check your local auto parts store.

Prime and paint it first the undercoating doesn't prevent rust on contact it helps create a barrier so the paint doesn' t scratch as easily.
