By Mazdacomp, do you mean Mazda Motorsports Development? If so, they can't accept cores so you end up paying more for a motor through them than going with a dealer than can accept them.

Also, as Mr. Pockets said, Mazda don't really care what kind of condition the core is returned to them in. As long as all the parts are there and they aren't obviously maliciously damaged, nobody says anything.

What is the price through mazmart for a reman? I can't seem to locate it on their website. Do the reman engines come with a reman date stamp? When I worked at chrysler they had a build date stamp so you could see when about they changed their process. I would hate to spend roughly 3600 on an engine to get the old style with reused housings etc. My engine is starting to have extended starts and I'm trying to decide between a quality rebuild of my core on the west coast or getting a mazda reman and eating the core charge

yeah, I think it's important to note that this is only one such engine and without further supporting data it might be presumptuous to assume you'll get the exact same thing .. by all accounts it's almost a new motor if it includes new rotors, rotor housings, e-shaft, & seals. However, they don't grind iron plates etc. either, which you can't be sure what you'll get there. If you have internal mods that are re-usable it could get complicated having to tear down and swap parts between two motors and then also assembling two motors unless you intend to eat the core fee.

The one thing I forgot though, Motorsport doesn't accept core fees anymore, so you can expect to eat $1000 though about 1/2 of that is the discount, but then it looks cheaper to buy one from a retailer except you also get to keep your old motor (and maybe not having to pay to ship it back depending on what your local sources/prices are) so that could play into it

AFAIK there's only 3 part numbers for the engine. 3rd being the claims of new rotors, housings, seals/gaskets etc. If that's the case then it's hard to justify a rebuild if mazda's quality control is sub par. Paul, do you have access to what was changed in the process to warrant a new part number.

If it's actually a 20% discount as said above, you pay roughly an extra $400 and keep your old engine. That's still a pretty good deal in my eyes.

It's currently $2,566.43 + $1000 core without shipping from MMD and you may be on the hook for sales tax if you are in Illinois, California, Pennsylvania, Georgia or Texas.

I can order one from Gosset Mazda in Nashville for $2874 and make a long road trip to pick it up to save on freight and tax. Searching for the part number in quotes reveals a number of other dealers selling around the country for between $2874 and $3200.

Obviously, the devil is in the details and it will be up to the individual if tinkering with a worn out engine is worth the price difference.

the part some people still don't get is that the performance decreases long before it's "worn out", running it into the ground is counter productive

True enough.
It's a risk, but some of us who use it as a DD and have budgetary constraints need to weigh our options.

I would like to get my currently failing engine replaced or rebuilt ASAP, but other practical issues are more pressing, and other than maxing out my credit cards, I need to put it on hold for now.

I was planning on getting my engine rebuilt, but this topic has me rethinking it.
I may consider buying this Mazda reman and keeping my old one to tear apart and possibly attempt a rebuild myself as an invaluable (imo) learning experience.

While I wouldn't consider swapping it out into my 8, it may be worth the investment to buy a cheap rolling 8 with a bad engine to try to see if it would be successful.
Plus, if it is worn out, it wouldn't be that big of a loss if unsuccessful.

This is all hypothetical atm of course, Life has a way of changing my mind.

I didn't tear my Mazda reman down, but it is clearly in good shape.

As for supporting evidence, you could ask Banzai. They offer an engine that starts with a Mazda reman. They tear it down immediately and replace a bunch of internal parts.

Engine Rebuild Level 5

Their page claims that the remans 'typically' have new rotors and housings, and that build seems to make that assumption.

Haas Mazda (promazdaparts) did tell me that the engine couldn't be seriously damaged. If there were big holes in it or missing parts, they may prorate the core.

My guess is that what they really want are the iron and steel parts - plates, e-shaft, flywheel and the front cover. My housings were trashed and they didn't say a thing.
