A/T vs M/T - gas milage difference

I wonder if A/T gets better gas milage than M/T because engine not as powerful (2 less ports)? Ihave an A/T and getting around 18-21 mpg.

If both car were racing at Le Mans with equally skilled drivers then the high power 8 would finish more laps in 24 hrs using more fuel as expected. Closer to real life, the A/T version has a slight tuning advantage for mileage. But the A/T's high pressure pump still takes some power even when the torque converter is locked while cruising so the engine tuning advantage is reduced. In traffic the A/T engine stays at more constant load with less time between shifts. This helps offset the slip in the unlocked torque converter so again the results are very close to a manual.

Posted for my Dad... cause his account is still hosed (Twin 8s!) and no one supporting the site has responded.

Great description of why I hate A/T units. Hopefully if I ask you the time you will not tell be how to build the clock :D

How bout some real numbers....

We have two RX-8s. Both are 6MT.

Mine has 4050 miles. I have drive 60/40 highway/city. I am averaging between 20.73 and 22.

My wife's has 2470 mile on it and she is averaging between 19 and 21.

Back to normal broadcasting... by the by I am getting my permit next week... do ya think Dad will let me drive one of the 8s?

I have an A/T and am only getting 13-16, mostly around town, stop and go. I'm not really happy about it at all. I need to take a pure highway trip to see if it comes up a bit.

Out of 43 responses that I have been somewhat able to discern both their avg. mph and what tranny type they have;

The average mpg for all mt/at is 18.3

AT averages are:
17.0
20.0
19.0
18.9
22.0

So, for the very little info that's been accrued for AT, which is very little indeed, the average AT mpg = 19.4
I wouldn't take that to the bank though...
