Sooo clutch went...Spec stage 2?

So my clutch recently started slipping really bad so i need to have it replaced...i was recommended to get a spec stage 2 clutch and thought it was a good idea as my rx8 is lightly modified but also daily driven (and i plan to do a couple more things)

But searching on here i haven't seen any rx8 owners running the spec stage 2 clutch and i dk why?

what do you guys think? should i look away from spec?

i know a stage one would handle the torque out cars but out fine but what do you guys think?

exedy stage 1, problem solved.

Probably because of the 12, or so, clutches that SPEC built for BHR 10 were garbage and caused nothing but problems. On top of that, SPEC refused to address the issues with me and I lost about $8,000 in that deal by the time I made my customers whole. I suggest either the ACT ZM8-HDSS or the Exedy Stage 1.

im thinking exedy stage 1. im looking and it says organic clutch kit. dont organic clutches tend to not have the best life duration? i thought i heard that

WTBRotary! 03-03-2011 07:18 PM

You do know the OEM Clutch is Exedy right? lol

Charles R. Hill 03-03-2011 07:20 PM

Organic means as opposed to asbestos. The disc life is going to be fine, assuming you use the clutch properly. Unless you are a serious racer (which 99% of us are not), the "Stage 1" types of clutches will suit your needs perfectly. Don't forget to reinforce your clutch pedal while you are at it, too.

yeah i know that

im going with the stage 1 organic kit

Why would we need to reinforce the clutch pedal? Is a aftermarket clutch harder to engage and might break the pedal in half? I've heard of them breaking but don't know the reason behind it.

The reason behind it is just that the clutch pedal has a weak bracket that has been known to break. Mazda just issued an extended warranty on it not too long ago actually.

Whats a good way to reinforce the bracket?

You can either weld it yourself or buy a reinforced pedal from blackhaloracing.com.
There's also race roots selling a bracket that does almost the same. It's a matter of preferences :)

venom914 03-07-2011 06:59 PM

would you even need to reinforce going to a stage 1?

Charles R. Hill 03-07-2011 07:09 PM

It has been demonstrated enough times to raise the interest of NHTSA that the OEM pedal is prone to failure even with the factory clutch and as few as 47K miles. It is better to reinforce it as a preventative than to wait until a problem arises. By the time a problem becomes evident, the synchros in the trans may already be worn.

this is probably a good post for the dumb question thread and im sorry to hijack but how exactly did you know your clutch was slipping? i think i may be having that issue but im not sure if this is it or not.

venom914 03-08-2011 06:22 AM

ive taken multipe people in my car and they said it was definitely the clutch and i sent it over to my mechanic and he also said that was the problem

Charles R. Hill 03-08-2011 08:30 AM

unsub

venom914 03-09-2011 02:12 PM

my mechanic received the clutch and now is saying it is cheap and is gona burn out in 3 months...hes telling me to get the EXEDY Stage 2 Cerametallic Clutch Kit...what do you guys think? and he is also saying the clutch job would be $900

Rotary-RX8 03-09-2011 02:17 PM

900 ?!?! Holy tamale

bse50 03-09-2011 02:17 PM

Change mechanic, problem solved.
A clutch job takes 3hrs being slow. Add 2qts of gear oil and that's the right price for it.

venom914 03-09-2011 02:22 PM

what about the clutch would you stay with the stage one ceramic or stage two cerametalic?

bse50 03-09-2011 02:23 PM

I go through transmissions faster than i go through clutches, and I have an exedy stage 1 clutch.
Again, your mechanic is a ripoff.

Rotary-RX8 03-09-2011 02:30 PM

^ Did you change your clutch cause it was burnt out or because you wanted to upgrade ?? Debating whether i should upgrade :dunno"

venom914 03-09-2011 05:35 PM

my clutch began so slip so i wanted to change it before it got worse

Rotary-RX8 03-09-2011 08:21 PM

I think mine slips sometimes but im not sure whether its me not giving enough gas :dunno:
