RX8 to heavy????

is the RX8 too heavy? they say it weighs 3000lbs give or take a few pounds of fish.

My 2000 Celica GTS was around 2500lbs give or take a few fish. Where is all the weight at?? between my ears? the doors? my ***? My Mullet? (not!) will there be any aftermarket lightweight suspension subframes? titanium? carbon fiber? (I know that it would be obscenely expensive, but hey I am a Nube trying to start a thread here.......I think they could have made it at least 2800lbs........give or take a few fish

No, only the hood on the FD was aluminum and the car weighs ~2789-2923lbs depending on model/options/transmission.

Supra, NSX, Z/G35, all weigh more. You can't compare a Celica to a car in this class.

Seventh generation Celicas weighed in at around 2500 lbs. According to Toyota's website, the lightest Celica, a GT 5MT, weighs in at 2425lbs, while the heaviest model, a GT-S automatic, weighs 2580lbs. The automatic transmisison adds 80lbs to the weight of the car when compared to its manual counterpart, so a Celica GT-S 6MT tips the scales at exactly 2500lbs. The Celica's light weight is one of the contributing factors to its superb handling and autocross potential and is also why the Celica GTS, with only 180hp, is every bit as quick as a 200hp, ~2800lb RSX-S.

scrape of a gram of material from every part of the car. switch the rims to smaller lighter weight ones. tires too of course. doing this will not only save you weight but also change the gearing so you can accelerate faster. replace the battery with a smaller one. remove the spare tire and/or tire inflation kit from the trunk. get the car with the cloth seats in the first place so you dont have the weight of the electric motors of the leather ones. if you have the leather ones adjust them to where you like them and rip out the electric motors. if you got the appearance package rip it all off. never fill the gas all the way. keep it only at half a tank. remove the ac unit- most people think it sucks anyway.

that should get you started.

Damn it I wrote all of the below before I read zoom's response! I'll leave it here anyways.

Option #1: Hire midget to drive or go on a diet.

Option #2: Take the rather extreme if not idiotic way of removing weight from the car that so many RX-7 people do. Remove the a/c and all of it's components. Remove all of the sound deadening material from the car. Remove the heavy bumper from underneath the bumper cover. Sell your wheels and install light steel wheels. Remove the stereo and speakers. Replace your windows with lexan. Remove any unecessary interior parts such as the back seats, and any plastic panels. Get rid of the airbags. Take the engine and battery covers off. Drill holes in any non structural sheet metal. Remove the cruise control components. Remove the metal reinforcing bars from underneath the dashboard. Install lighter racing seats (a viable alternative!). No rear wing. No accent package. No body kits. You "might" if you are lucky, get a couple of hundred pounds out of all of this. Maybe.

If Option B isn't a reasonable alternative then I suggest Option A or wait until more powerful upgrades become available to make the car faster.

Don't drive around with pounds of fish in the car. :D

But if you really want to shave pounds, Zoom44 and Rotarygod are on the right track.

taking weight out of the car just isn't practical.
cars these days have rather extensive structures in the chassis, and that's where all the weight is, as opposed to cars of a few decades ago where the body had all the wieght and the chassis was just what the body rested on.

also, dont' forget that the RX-8 is actually very light compared to other cars in its class (4 seater coupes, or sports sedans), and is even lighter than a couple sports cars i can name, like a Mustang GT or a 350Z.

you could shave some weight without losing much in the way of civility by replacing the front seats with light weight racing ones ~50-60lbs, get lightweight glass for the rear of the car (lexan) run with 1/2 tank of gas.

thats about all ive found you can do and still drive a streetable comfortable car

1.) Drive naked and shave every hair off your body! That's easily 1 lbs there.
2.) Get titanium exhaust.
3.) Debadge your car.
4.) Replace everything in your car with carbon fiber.

That's all I can think of right now. :D

Well, my advice is to just trade your car in for a bike...a 10 speed. Sure it will never go as fast, unless you're Sonic the Hedghog, but it's light and it can get you from Point A to Point B...eventually. Plus, imagine all of the hot young chicks you'll be able to pick up, before you're hauled off to jail. Sweet statutory rape!! BTW, does Sonic need a bicycle?

Yeah, The Celica is 2500 lbs, it is also 4 inches shorter than the RX-8, it is narrower and has FWD. The Celica also uses very lightweight interior panels, which border on cheap. The Celica has 16 inch tires, smaller brakes, no power seat and two doors.

A better comparsion for weight would be the S2000, it is 8 inches shorter than the RX-8, has only TWO seats, but weighs about 150 lbs less. Given all that Mazda did a GREAT job in packaging a 4 seat RWD car that weighs less than 3000lbs.

With the power available, I think our RX-8's are 500 pounds over weight. 2500 pounds and 300 HP now your talkin baby.
