RX8 Can Bus Components?

Hi Guys

I'm currently pulling apart a full wiring loom from a RX8 donor car and am installing it (and the engine) into a 1979 Mazda 323 station wagon.
I'm deleting everything unnecessary to engine controls, so I can drive this vehicle in the not too distant future and I have a budget that I'm attempting to stick to.

So my question is: What components run on the Can Bus system?

From what little I know it basically means far less wires. Eg the orange wire to the dash can show a number of differing display options. However when deleting things like SAS and DCM I'm worried I may run into problems if they also communicate via can protocol.
I know it doesn't all run via Can, but just needing some specifics.

Cheers
P.S. I'm not really interested in aftermarket ECU at this stage - because of the huge complexities on running a full standalone ECU

Well it mostly does. There are potentially 29 CAN modules according to this link

RX8 Build Blog ? The EV Conversion Guide

The fact that you ask rather than doing even the most basic research speaks volumes ...

Definitely an interesting read, but almost half of the devices on his CAN bus are related to EV components he added himself.

Thanks teamrx8, I did do some rudimentary searching both on this forum and on google but I couldn't find any specific answers to what I was after.

I seem to to have my answer now - it's that I need to understand a lot more about CAN in general.

I didn't look that closely, but a simple search turned up quite a few decent hits

IIRC, the main modules using the CAN system in the RX8

- PCM
- EBCM
- P/S Module
- Steering angle sensor
- Instrument panel
- "Keyless" Module (BCM)

Just remember that omitting any of the modules may result in the others not working happily together, unless you can replicate the CAN Signals.

There is a good bit of information on the Mazda CAN systems online, but really none of them can be eliminated without something not working properly. Also be sure to check diagrams for where the terminating module is, and which ones are passing data through the module rather than a splicepack.

I have the Instrument panel operating entirely on its own with a module creating a CAN Signal to operate it. The RX8's CAN system is rather primitive and easy to work with, however each module handles more functions than newer vehicles which further separate them into more modules.

The EBCM may be eliminated with rather limited consequence, but any other module will result in a drop of body functions, or no power steering.

Nice. I'll keep that all in mind Chezmanbespoke.

In the last few days I've found proof that the engine can run with just the dash and the diagnostic being kept.

Not to say that you're wrong in anyway but because I'm doing a transplant, I really only need the engine going at this stage. Other consequences I can address one by one as they manifest themselves.

Looks like I've found someone to fix the abs light for me on this forum so that's a start!

My main question is why are you deleting things out of the loom? Is it a track car with no interior or what?

I've amended the first post to be more specific. I'm retro fitting an engine and the standard ECU into an older car.
