RX-8 Oil Filter - same as Miata

(I did a search and couldn't find this posted anywhere yet...)

I dropped in at the dealer to pick up a few accessories yesterday, and wanted a couple of oil filters - it turns out that the RX-8 uses the exact same filter as the Miata. Pretty handy when you already have a flat of 6 Miata filters on the shelf!

Regards,
Gordon

Isn't there some sort of similarity between the Miata and the RX-7 filter too?

If I remember right, the 3rd gen RX-7 and 2nd gen RX-7 used different filters - the 3rd gen was smaller. But, the 2nd gen filter went right on, and a lot of people used it as an upgrade.

Hard to say if a bigger filter would actually fit or be easy to remove, given the tight confines.

BTW, I'm a fan of Purolator's Pure One filter - VERY well designed and excellent filtering.

I would not be surprised. The 3rd gen fuel filter is the same as that on the Miata as well, which I'm sure will be the case for the 8.

All Proteges, Miatas, and RX-7s use the same OEM Mazda oil filter B6Y1-14-302-9A

I want to say all Mazda 4cyl's use the same filter, but I'm not certain if the new MZR 2.3L in the Mazda6i uses it.

What was that directed towards? The 8's filter or the FD's?

I bought a filter from Trussville also. My question is.......do you need to replace the oil drain plug WASHER when you change the oil? I noticed that Trussville sells the washers also?

any 14mm drain plug washer found at your local auto parts store will also work.

just did a quick check, the MZR 2.3 4 cyl does NOT use the B6Y1-14-302-9A filter.

washer w/ filter

Most of the time I've bought a Miata oil filter the dealer gave me a washer taped on to the box, and will give one if asked - I used to think they came to the dealer that way.

Several years ago when I was still buying filters at the Mazda dealer, the parts counter person told me Mazda only uses two filters, a large and small. Maybe the 2.3 litre engine is a Ford?

nah, the MZR 4 cyl is a brand new, all-Mazda engine.

but it was nice of Mazda to design their engines to use only 2 filters though

According to Miata.net, it is imperative to use the original Mazda filter with a Miata. There are more details on the webiste. I imagine it is the same with the RX-8.

you can get it NOW.

RX-8 uses the same filter as the RX-7, so whatever filter they have for the RX-7, is good for the RX-8.

-IT'S BEEN THE SAME FILTER SINCE 1979 1ST GENS 2ND & 3RD.

Just some more info from the Miata knowledge base. That same B6Y1-14-302-9A filter is also available from Mazda under different part numbers depending at which plant the filter was made. Here are some of the Mazda part numbers for that same filter

B6Y1-14-302-9A
B6Y2-14-302
B6Y2-14-302A
B6Y1-14-302A
B6Y1-14-302
B631-14-302
B6Y0-14-302
FEY0-14-302-9C
FEY0-14-302
F802-23-802
B6Y0-14-300
N3Y6-14-302
0370-23-802
N231-23-802

Until recently (3 months ago) we were all buying B6Y2-14-302 filter from Mazda - it was Tennex, made in USA. Then Mazda switched from the Tennex filters to these B6Y1-14-302-9A 'Made in Europe'

I am not sure if the new B6Y1-14-302-9A is better or worse than B6Y2-14-302. But for sure B6Y1-14-302-9A is smaller!
Btw recently Mazda lowered the prices too - and at the dealerships the price went down from $7 to around $4-$5

Just to followup on the K&N filter post - a K&N HP-1007 fits also and is a little larger than the HP-1008. I havent tried for fitment on the rx8 yet, but it fits on the FD no problem and that's pretty tight around the oil filter with the intake and so forth. On the FC you can fit a much bigger filter since there's less stuff around the filter pedestal.

Of course, I'm not certain that bigger == better, however a you'd think given same filter internals (like from one K&N to another) that the bigger one would be the better choice.

Simon.
