rx 8 engine failure

Hi everyone,

My RX 8 engine failed, so i decided to pull it apart to see whats gone wrong.

Well the bearings are knackered the rotor housing look shot!!! The apex seal's are heavily worn!!. One of the rotor housings looks like it has a crack in it by one of the plug holes.

Just looking for opinions on the failure and the causes and what i can do to prevent it.

Please give us all the info on your car.....The service it's had and parts replaced. Model, miles, type of driving it gets(long commutes), fuel used, oil type and consumption, ever flooded, red lined. Just any thing that you can add. Were you aware Mazda extended the warranty too 8yrs 100K.

She looks like she was rode hard and put away wet. Have you ever run low on oil?
Looks like a whole lot of HIGH rpm use. Eccentric Shaft flex on the stationary gear bearings.

Hi guys

The car (2004 model) did approx 58k and is standard, it was always serviced on time and i checked my oil regulaly the most i ever need was 3/4litre to bring back up to max. I used Fuchs XTR 5w-30 for servicing and top up. The only real problem the car has had is a missfire at 45k approx and it ended up needing coils plugs and leads. It never overheated or had any other problems.

Thanks

Why did you tear it down? Mazda would have installed a new one N/C? I see you have been on here for years.....why...

I see no location so now we know......Are you going to pre-mix on your new engine. Is it new or rebuilt(US now gets rebuilt)?

How often did you change oil and did it burn much. You might want to pre-mix. Did you put the apex seals on a straight edge and see if it is worn more in the center.

Go to the "Tech Garage", and read the premixing thread. It's long, but very informative.

Here is another thread that's good. https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/my-sneaky-plan-extend-engine-life-series-i-190372/. Also read the "Possible Renesis Engine Failure?" thread. Lots and lots of good stuff in there.

Those three threads taught me a lot.

Welcome! Read this thread to catch up on what you need to know:

https://www.rx8club.com/new-member-forum-197/new-potential-owners-start-here-202454/

Pre-mix means adding two-stroke oil to the gas.
