Rotary Engine and NOS

Never having owned a Rotary Engine before i was wondering if it is possible to do NOS on a Rotary Engine and are there any special Complications compared to a Piston Engine.

hmm good question. I guess similarities between pistons and rotaries still apply like cooler spark plugs. I think that the new intake ports and the fact that a second set of ports open up (around 7000rpms???) it might take more tuning than a piston engine would.

Many things that have been done with existing N/A rotaries very much apply to the RENESIS and the RX-8.

A great source for info on FC3s's, like a how-to for a wet and dry NOS system can be found on http://www.fc3s.org/

http://www.fc3s.org/how_tos/engine/nos_wet.html

Many of you rotary newbies should search the internet for this kind of information, and become aware of the long history of rotary tuning and racing. Even though this is a new car, the basics of rotary tuning still apply.

NOS systems on the rotary should always be wet systems. (wet system = gas is injected at the same time the naaws) Otherwise detonation will occur, and the apex seals will crack, score the rotor housing... time for a new engine.

oh my!!!!! Newbies.... gotta love 'em:D

There seem to be many noobs here that have never experienced rotary engines before. That may be an excellent thing in terms of interest and sales for Mazda. However, lack of real-world knowledge of the rotary can often lead to bad experiences.

Rotaries (especially NA) of the past have been very good engines. Most of their problems have been with owners/mechanics who don't know jack **** about proper maintenance. They are just a bit more finicky/sensitive to maintenance techniques than piston-poppers.

My first RX-7 was an '89 NA. I basically screwed the car because I did not know how to take care of it at the time. Since then, the cars have treated me very well.

So, on that note. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!! READ UP!!!!!!!! EDUCATE YOURSELVES!!!!!!! Then..................... mod your car.

P.S. Do not abuse your rotary, but do not "baby" it either. Wankels like to be exercised!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just my $.02. Lay off the NOS until we get some concrete testing/tuning info. Or, spend the money and add power the REAL way..... basic mods.

Of course you can use NOS on the Rotary.

Obviously you have not seen Vin Diesel's car in the original Fast and Furious movie.

I heard that Ari Yallon's 9 second RX7 runs more than 200 shot of NOS.

Regarding maintenance, I add oil (synthetic) every time the oil buzzer goes off and change the oil 12-15k miles. My 1st motor was still running at 204k miles, I sold it to an RX7 guy who put it into his car. My odometer currently reads over 319,000 miles (115k on my 2nd motor).

My 88 NA GXL RX7 will have over 320k miles on it when my RX-8 arrives. I drive the tar out of it. Baby schmaby.

This is why I waited for the RX-8.

Dont use Vin Deisels car as your proof. That was a sneaky pete NOS system which was probably 25-30hp shot if it was even hooked up. Ari yallon runs his shot at 75-100hp and as a spool up until 17psi. He can keep it on but ususally doesnt. Rotaries love N20 but you must make sure the fuel delivery is very accurate and timing isnt too far advanced. Dont do it yourself if you are not 100% confident in your abilities. The biggest problem is how cheap it is people just DIY it and usually make multiple mistakes in the tuning department and blow out apex seals. just my $.02

how do you know it was a 25-30 shot? we didnt see the engine in the movie. the great myth is that nitrous screws engines up... only if dont stupidly, or you heat the bottle too much, boost too much than the engine can handle. dont supply with enought fuel, etc. nitrous is a proven performance item that has been used for several decades
