I just got a new K&N air filter and i opened up the airbox and found some oily residue on the bottom inside the air box. I smelled it and it was not oil it just had a oil like consistency. I cleaned it all out, made sure there were no air leaks in the air box and put my filter back in.

Anybody have any ideas what it might be?

Let me guess, either you did not follow instructions on oil change, or someone else did the oil change for you.

What you are seeing is the results of OVERFILLING the motor oil.

So what happens now?

Go do another oil change now, and when refilling, make SURE that you put 3 quarts in first. Let the car run, for a while, go home, shut it off, take a quick 10 minute break, go back to your car and check the oil level make sure its right, you might be able to add 1/2 a quart, u dont need to go all the way.

Oh also, you might want to Take your MAF out and look at it, its probably covered in oil. clean it with Electrical safe spray. NEVER EVER touch anything on the MAF with ur hands or whatever. only spray.

Now You're good to go, lets wait for the next n00b to show up.

 

Can also be blow-by if you don't have a catch can.

Lots of members have it dripping from the airbox drains (yes, there are drains) down thru the radiator.

sorry, New to the forums and Rotarys. Every other car i had all you do is put the recommended in and drive off. I didn't realize that you needed to do all that. Thanks for the info and Ill keep that in mind when I do my own oil change, as I have with my last 27 cars. Anyways, I have never done an oil change on this car. I purchased it 2 months ago from Carmax (so I guess that would fall under the category that somebody else did it) and decided to get a K&N, and I have a 3 year warranty through them so ill let them check it out.

all cars got some sort of *spec* that you should follow, oil capacity is one of them.

no biggy, just dont overfill it again.

 

I see you have only had the car two month and wanted to make sure you knew the Rotary is an oil injected engine and will need oil occasionally.

 

no I did not know that. I have had 27 cars but i know nothing about rotarys and I greatly appreciate the info all of you have gave me. whats a good time to check it? once every 2 weeks?

It really depends on how much you drive. I check mine every other week, some people check it every time they fill up. As long as you're not going too long in between, you'll be fine.
Also, if the oil light comes on....put oil in it ASAP.

Well, you might want to give MNAO a call and see if you still have to do the recall.

If your car has been sitting on the lot for a while, there is a good chance that the recall still havent been done.

Oh when you're calling MNAO, ask them when your warranty ends, cuz some early 04 got some really long warranty even longer than us 05.

 

There are 1.8 quarts between the two marks on your dip stick. You don't have to keep it at the top of the mark just make sure it does not go below the low mark. There is everything you need to know in your manual and on here.

just be very careful with the MAF; they're sensitive little guys

 

When MAF cleaning, make sure to spray up inside the body where the MAF sensor is, not just wipe off the brown bulb......

What can it be, if not motor oil?!? Maybe was fresh motor oil (not much smell in that case)?
I used to get oil in there before the catchcan install, but never seen anything else... Strange indeed.
