R Flash Made Huge Difference

Got the R Flash today and man what a difference. I have always had a dead spot in all gears from about 3500-4500 as well as it being real sluggish off the line. Always felt there was some acceleration lag when coming down a bit hard on it. Now with the flash the dead spot is gone and it is really quick to respond. I haven't gotten it upto highway speeds and beyond, but on the street upto 50 was awesome. I highly recomend it.

I to, experienced what I perceive as improvement within basically the same rpm range after having the flash done as part of the thermal recall.
What I don't know, however, is if performing the 'reset' procedure with the previous flash (M) would have accomplished the same results. I'll monitor the 'perceived' performance over the next week or so to see if it degrades and then if it does, I'll reset and see it that helps.

Well...thats what I thought (was told). I bought the car (an 04) in March of this year and upon taking it back (a week later) for strakes, the Dealer told me they also updated the ECU with the latest flash.....I asked which one, the Service guy said 'M'.Sooooo, as long as they told me correctly, I was on M before getting R with the Thermal Recall.

I just had my 04 in for headlight replacement last week (Zoom44- it was at Premier
Mazda in Milwaukie) and there was no mention of a recall verbally or on the paperwork, nor was there any mention of any reflash even though I have asked
about it every time I've had it in for service.

I believe I'm still on 'M'. The car runs great, but I thought it odd that they didn't address the recall issue at least.

was on N before this flash. i had it done because i was tired of waiting around to see this car's real potential. i have read alot of threads that stated how well this car performed and never saw it firsthand. was always hoping something was available to pick her back up. i have had the reset done before and even have done it myself but never saw anything like this. maybe i am just lucky, but whatever it was i like it.

I was on the M flash. About a week ago I had a CEL. Took it in to Pacifico Mazda (Philly). P0456, small evap leak that they cleared and checked out. I mentioned the recall campaign but told them that I hadn't gotten my notice yet. They did the recall, (Group2), installed the shield and R flash. The new flash does feel stronger in the low to mid range rpms. Also the mileage seems better on the guage for the first full tank since the flash ( I will be checking actual mileage at my next fill). Also, Kudos to Pacifico for doing my recall while there, they are a good shop.

I checked my past logs and my new ones. I have noticed that on the past logs (with M Flash), the AFR starts dropping rich above 3000 RPM. The new logs (with R Flash), starts dropping rich above 6000 RPM. Before those points the AFR ranges from 13.8 - 14.7.

The increase in low to mid range response is NOT psychological at all. I have moved my CZ maps to start adjusting at 2900 RPM (5800 RPM in full scale) because of this.

Butt dyno says much improved

My low-tech biofeedback interface also notices a significant improvement in response at lower rpms. :D

Kidding aside, big difference from the M flash.

Funny... but I went the opposite way!!

I had the M flash before and now I have R flash. My driving habits have not changed.. driving at ~74 MPH 6th gear to avoid the secondary port to open...

Before ~19.5 MPG
Now ~ 18

Indeed the flat spot in the upper range (~6750 RPM) is now gone but my mileage went to hell.. especially now that 91 octane is $3.19/gallon

I will start using 87 octane and see if it makes a difference...

Carlos

But doesn't the Flash get reset when you load the new firmware?

I will try... So all I need to do is have the key in the ignition in the ON position, do not start the car, and then tap the brake 20 times? How fast?

After that turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
Then start the engine?

We'll see if this works...

Carlos
ps. Also in San Jose.

^ No, the Flash will not disappear. It only clears the Fuel trim settings (ECU's own adjustments after learning your driving style). How fast? As fast as you can. I think the TSB data said "within 8-10 seconds." Sometimes I use my hand to tap it quickly.

The oil needle should swing and return to position.

^ We'll find out after Saturday's dyno day that I'm joining. I'd like to see what I'm pulling stock with R Flash and CZ with R Flash.
