Question about Redline

Today when I was out for a rip I took the rpms up to 9500, where she cut out, just before shifting. Did I harm my engine?

Welcome to the built-in-for-safety fuel cut.

Weird, I've hit the rev limiter multiple times without it cutting out on my 6MT. It couldn't be an AT because those are locked at 7500 RPM redline so the torque converter doesn't explode.

...

The rev limiter and the fuel cut are the same thing. The beep is NOT the rev limiter, it is more of a 'rev warning' and sounds well before fuel cut.

Fuel cut is HOW the rev limiter functions, limiting revs.

Maybe I'm not understanding what he means when he says "cut out." Does he just mean he hit the rev limiter? I know the beep is the warning.

Yes, he hit fuel cut. I guess he didn't know it was there.

Hm, that's interesting lol. You'd think the red backing on the tach and the loud beeping sound would be some sort of indicator?

I usually hit the beep and shift but got a little excited and went a bit further this time, the rpm needle stops and bounces around 9500 (I believe this is where fuel is cut). I went for another drive later on and all seems ok.

No, it does not harm the engine. It's smoother if you don't hit it, but nothing wrong with hitting it.

FYI the automatic will go past 7500 rpm's it will cut the fuel @ 8250 before it stops revving. No rev limiter at 7500 or mine doesn't work.

I've hit the cutoff numerous times, usually with the stereo loud enough that I don't hear the beep, and driving in an enthusiastic manner where my eyes are on the road and not on the tach.

I've heard that's no bueno for the torque converter. I'm no expert, though.

I try not to do it, I did it by accident forgot I had put in gear to use the paddle shifters everyone seems to hate. They are still faster than using a clutch on a manual trans.

Too bad the auto RX8 is slower regardless of how fast it shifts ...

I really don't care how fast it I when I'm setting in stop a go traffic for an hour or two. Neither rx8 is fast compared to my FD I just sold, it would smoke about any 8 stock or not( they aren't really that fast manual or auto). I have a modified convertible Rx7 if I want to f**k @ with a clutch pedal all the time, and my wife's 08' corvette is plenty fast if I need to go fast. My brother has a manual 8 I'm not missing that much the clutch pedal in the 8 sucks.

RX-8s aren't about straight line speed. If that's what you're looking for then you're looking in the wrong place. The RX-8's home is in winding roads.

I think anyone with an MT 8 can shift much faster than the auto.

You think your hand and foot are so much faster than hitting the button up or down their really not, ive drove both. You can run second gear to @ 87 mph even in the 4 port auto you all hate.
Our corvette would eat up an 8 thru winding roads and then some.

We all love our 8 for different reasons, mine is not having to use a clutch when shifting.
Our 8's still turn heads at any speed just an awesome machine. I loved my FD till I bought my 8. There really is no comparison in comfort, build or ride quality.

your skill < someone else
Additionally, the paddle shifters guarantee nothing, the computer can decide at any time that the shift is a bad idea and ignore your input. If you push in a clutch and select a gear(provided all components are healthy and the synchros can take it), you are going into that gear with the manual.

Good keep the carbon from building up in your engine.

Yeah, the button is more of a suggestion box than anything else and the tech is much older than that in modern cars.
