question about recall

Its been a while since I posted here since I don't have my 8 anymore. (got a 7 after and buying a turbo 2 soon) so I work at advance auto and I have customers come to me asking about rotaries when they have problems. I had a customer come in and tell me his apex seals are shot. my question is if the recall was never done on his 8 would the recall come into play here our was there an expiration date on the recall?

If you look here Home | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) you will find 4 safety recalls for the RX8. None of them relate to the engine core.
Mazda tends to make settlements with the goverment, doing things internally (changes in warranty, safety campaigns, ...) that don't require formal U.S. government recalls.

I know they extended the warranty, but I remember taking mine in for a recall which led them to changing my plugs, wires and cat. So here its the next question, of it falls under the warranty of the 8 years, 100k miles would they fix or replace it?

there was a low power recall, MSP16 i think, and they checked the engine and cat, and then reflashed the ecu, but most of these have been done, AND you need to check the vin with mazda to see its status.

but yes, if the car is under 8years/100,000miles and the engine tests bad, they will replace it.

^Assuming the owner has followed proper maintenance, kept a record, and has no extreme modifications (mid pipe, turbo, nitro)

this is the exact reason why no one should ask any chain store employees for advise on anything

The recall you remember was 4206f, which was an emission recall. It included a reflash that helped reduce the flooding issue. There was also a vacuum test to see if the engine was healthy or needed to be replaced under warranty. Dealers were also supposed to either fill the gas tank or wash the car as part of "white glove" treatment.

I got a car wash, and the lead plugs were replaced. Also a free rental for the day. At the time of 4206f all 8s were still under the 4 year B-B.

MSP16 is a reflash. That applies to all 8s, whether in warranty or not. Dealers are actually supposed to make sure it's done for any 8 that comes in for any kind of service. I believe that reflash improved the programming of the OMP, so it's an important one.

But if that 8 is beyond 8 years/80k, the owner's on his own for the engine.

the service writers are actually trained to run the warranty history on every car that comes in the door, just so they can catch any open recalls, etc.

not that it actually happens 100% of the time....

The trainers need to use bigger whips.

After MSP16 had been out for a while, I brought a printout of the TSB along when I went in for an oil change. Asked my service writer if it had been done. He checked, and found it had not. They took care of it on that visit. IMHO, this dealer is quite good, but it never hurts to keep on top of these things yourself. Much appreciation to the members of this site for sharing information, and Rosenthal Arlington for making TSBs available to all of us.

you are correct, Mazda is nice enough to babysit you, but ultimately it is YOUR car, not theirs.
