If I got a midpipe, but wanted to be stealth most of the time, would this exhaust controller be appropriate?

Or would this bypass the exhaust system altogether and dump straight to atmosphere?

I would be VERY leery of any performance MOD listed on Ebay. The motor for the Butterfly would be very close to the exhaust pipe in the Ebay item. RX-8 exhaust gets VERY HOT, could burn out the motor in that very fast. You also need to factor into that the cost of the custom exhaust work, cutting out a section of pipe and adding the bypass section. As stated many times before here Mazda put on a pretty good exhaust system (power wise) so other than noise power gains would not be very noticeable.

 

And the noise from an unmuffled rotory engine is so loud it can cause deafness. IMSA use to allow the RX3's and RX7's to run open exhaust in the late 70's. It was painful to listen to the cars as they went by.

 

It's not a performance mod, it's a "My exhaust is so loud, people on Harley's stay away from me, I need something to quiet this thing down so I don't break the neighbor's windows every time I come in at night" mod. Looks like an adjustable solenoid, and not a motor. Solenoids are pretty durable and get very hot themselves when energized.

 

Hmmm I was thinking there was some way to rig something like this to breathe thru a testpipe when i wanted, and a stock cat otherwise... I guess the room underneath the car, and the cost/complexity might not be worth it?

 

The difference between a stock cat and a straight pipe is only about 7 hp or so. That is alot of effort for something you won't feel.

 

I was speaking in terms of sound, not performance. There would be sometimes that I would want very loud exhaust, and then sometimes I would want to be stealth... just trying to envision I could have these things with the push of a button!

A butterfly valve inline in the exhaust system wil definitely control noise a little. More importantly it will control the amound of flow through the exhaust. This can affect your powerband. The Australian one in the link above has a controler that can be dialed in. This may do a little bit for low and midrange power but it also keeps the car quieter until you really get on the gas. You would defintily want a different, louder muffler in conjunction with this. It could work really good. It's good in theory. Try it out and let us know how you like it.
