A question about the amount of motor oil

How many quart of oil does a RX-8 take when you do an oil change? What happen if you put too much or to little oil in?

Sump holds 7 quarts, but you can only get about 4.5 quarts out on a normal drain as the oil in the oil coolers will not drain. Thus, refill is about 4.5 quarts with filter.

Because you cannot change out all the oil with each change, more changes are recommended - I change every 2500 miles.

A little too much oil will not hurt, but you absolutely do not want the oil level to get get below to dipstick level (about 1.7 quarts low)

You should check your oil every other fill-up until you get a baseline for how much oil your engine injects and adjust from there. Usage can vary wildly depending on how you drive and the characteristics of your engine - average seems to be 1qt usage every 1500-2500 miles though it is more for some.
