Premix & Tail Pipe Soot

I started using Idemitsu premix two tanks ago in about a 1-400 ratio. I noticed a DRASTIC reduction in the amount of soot left inside the exhaust tips. Is this a good / normal thing? Does the car (OMP) see the premix and not add as much dirty crankcase oil and as a byproduct I am getting a lot less of the black soot? Other wise my 8 is running fine.

Be careful....a DRASTIC reduction is soot can be the sign of a developing clogged CAT.

If you still have an OMP you shouldnt be running premix.

That is why I am going with a conservative 1-400 ratio

From reading about Pre-Mix here and a talk with Paul from Mazmart I think this will help in the long term life of my engine.

On the bottle they recommend a 1-256, which I am sure is based on a engine without a OMP.

what motor oil are you using... i noticed a huge reduction in the smoot. and i know you know what smoot is! when i went to rp. 5w30 about 20k miles ago... heavy smoot gone. with the premix i am running as you 4oz per tank... it is a bit less...

i think the answer is the stuff burns clean... and i am not running the fancy premix you are ... i have run everything from mobile 1 to belray racing (15bucks a qt, wont happen again). to stuff i found at walmart. 4 bucks a qt...

just make sure it is 2 stroke synthtetic oil..

i , too have noticed a reduction in the amount of black soot. i use my blend which ends up sounding a lot like the idemistu--lucus top cylinder lube/cleaner and yamaha lube blend. I am getting more and more interested in the omp source relocation.
Plus--- dont forget to relocate the oil filler vent to either a catch can or a downdraft tube.

Pre mix - what a concept.

I've still got about a gallon of 2 stroke castor and couple gallons of 2 stroke synthetic sitting around. I don't think castor would be the best since it tends to leave a varnish behind. Great for bike motors probably not too good for an RX8.

The synthetic might be just what the Dr ordered. Burns about as clean as gasoline.

Speaking of mixing, I've been adding a bit of methanol to the fuel and running 89 octane rather then 93. I have a detonation counter connected and while it's not audible, the det counts on straight 89 octane are scarey. It goes away almost completely on 93 octane. It's audible on 87 octane - if you know what to listen for.

So far it takes about 11 parts gas to 1 part methanol to eliminate the detonation. (Methanol is cheaper then Ethanol in the current market). It only saves about $2.00 a tankfull so I'll go back to 93 octane. Just thought it was interesting.

Are you saying that you guys are premixing with motor oil? Two stroke oil is the way to go.

I am not saying that. The Pre Mix that I am using is not motor oil. It's designed to be used in the fuel tanks of Rotary powered cars only.

sorry, you asked what kind of motor oil he was using, guess I was mistaken. Thats kinda lame if the newly designed renesis doesnt get enough oil from the omp system. I can understand if they leaned it out for better emissions, but not if its going to comprimise the life of the engine. The rotaries have a bad enough rep as it is.

In the attached photo you can see the amount of soot that accumalted in 270 miles ( about a tank ) of driving. That is from BOTH 4" Greddy SP2 tips. Before premix the tips would be solid black in about 80 miles.

I might burst some bubbles here.... Not to spoil to fun, but perhaps to get more discussion on is premix THE answer, part of the answer, or really none of the answer to soot.

I too thought I had the answer to soot....actually attributed it to one or more things. This spring I did a mega 8 wire super grounding kit... 4 guage wire over 2000 strands oxygen free copper each...platinum terminals...cool stuff. Soot just about disappeared althogether. At the same time I also switched to using Lucas premix. So I wasn't sure...but I knew what I didn't see anymore.

Next I learned I had engine problems...stopped using premix...installed new plugs...smoother idle, less hesitation...but no power.

Next I got the California ECU reflash.... nope that's not the problem... but no soot still....a choked cat turned out to be the next discovered problem...so choked I eventually couldn't exceed 75mph in third... was this why I got no soot anymore?? Or was it the grnd kit?? ...or was it he premix? But I'd stopped using the premix?

New cat in ...next solid check egine light due to misfires...so new coils installed... still no soot but no premix either? Confused ... but happy no soot anyway. So now I've added a 30F cap in the mix, just for fun. Still no soot.

So??? Grnd Kit?? New plugs?? New cat?? New coils?? or perhaps 10% ethanol gas?? mandated since 6/1/06?? or the cap??? maybe just the turn to summer weather...is muggy weather good, or hot... we've hjad lots of both.....but I've not used premix since maybe early June and I still have shiny clean pipes w/barely a hint of black in a single dark dribble line out the bottom of each pipe.

Not saying premix isn't a possibility, but perhaps it is just coincidence??? I really don't know. Maybe some of you could stop premix and see if the soot returns or stays away?

for me the smoot has been gone since i switched to rp...

no cat or coil problem here.. just the issue i premix for...

i think if one was having slight seal blow buy and premix fixed it... the motor oil would burn more completly...

just an idea..

My 8 was running fine before / after the premix. The addition of premix is the only change for me. I wasn't expecting anything much to change by using 4 oz per tank so when I saw this I made the thread. Now here is a thought, the premix is causing a very light coat of oil to remain in the inside of the tips and the soot is just flying into the air?? Much the same way Olestra worked??

no,
the pre mix is giving a better seal, and motor oil is burning more complete....

or the premix is causing the motor oil to burn more complete..

I do think it depends upon how hard you drive the car.

If you drive it hard you will less or none at all. If you use a heaver weight oil you will also have less residue.

Talk to some people who do Auto X or HDPE. Some of them have hot white tips!
