Power Steering Control Module Installation

Hi all,

Has anyone ever replaced the EPS Module or know where it's located and the best way to get to it? I was able to find one cheap through atkinsrotary (dealer wanted $1250) but now have to install myself or have someone else do it. Any feedback would be great, thanks.

It's below the ECU in the ECU case...

You will need to have the EPS re-initialized with an iDS at a dealer or like

Sorry ..no homemade way to do it

Its true.

it just tells the module where is the "neutral" position.

you can save a few bucks by getting the module yourself, but do it only if you are sure the module has failed.

most of the time its the wiring harness, then its the rack.

Out of ideas. Not sure if replacement module is good or not.

I replaced the power steering control module with a used unit but it didn't fix my power steering. (I replaced it because the computer was giving a code saying the module is bad and I've replaced everything else with new parts, harness, rack, etc.) Does the dealer need to reinitialize it for the light to go off? I'm just wondering how I'll be able to tell if the unit I put in is good or bad? I'd hate to pay the dealer to reinitialize, only to find out that the used one I bought is also bad. I thought I had heard that the module was plug and play (from a couple guys on YouTube). Is that not the case?

A little background about my issue, in case it helps:

I have a 2011 RX-8. (Sorry, I'd post this in the Series 2 forum, but it seems I'm only allowed to reply, not make a new post.) After having a remanufactured engine installed, my power steering started going out slowly over time. It worked on cold starts for awhile, but would eventually stop working after the car was running for a bit every time I'd be out driving. A few weeks ago, it gave out completely and never engages, even when cold. Fuse by battery checks out good. I tried cleaning all the connectors, as recommended in the forum posts here. No dice. So, I replaced the wiring harness with a new one. Nope. So, I replaced the whole rack with a remanufactured one. Still didn't fix it. The car is giving a code that the module is bad (or perhaps it's a communication issue). Replacing the module with a used unit didn't do the trick either. I'm not sure if I should try another used module or not. If it needs to be reinitialized before it will appear to work, I may need to get a new module to be sure it will be a working unit when I take it to the dealer.

Any help is appreciated. I'm going out of my mind. The Mazda service mechanic actually refused to diagnose the issue (besides plugging in his computer). I'm at a complete loss here.

Thanks,
Jeremy

My 2004 had steering issues where it would fight against me steering the car, it would shake back and forth very quickly, and would randomly drop assistance. Tried fixing the cables (cleaning and soldering them) but it didn't fix the issue. It got to the point it happened all the time and every time I drove and car. I eventually bit the bullet and bought a brand new rack (not a remanufactured) and its been fine for almost 6 months.

Weird part is I never had any error codes or lights for the steering.

yeah, the rack becomes a bit dirty and mucked up internally over time and has to either be overhauled or replaced to correct it.

My 04 had a steering problem but when it would cut out my speedo would drop to zero and stop showing speed at the same time. In the end it was a wheel speed sensor on the rear drivers side the had damaged wire. Fixed the wire and I it's been about a year without issue.
