Ok everyone,
I have always wanted this engine to have a higher idle rpm. Mine is about 850 or so. I got to thinking (which is a dangerous thing for me) and I wondered if there is a way to keep the speed sensor on the transmission turned on and if so would that cause any problems? That sensor keeps the engine at about 1k if I am not mistaken
Ok -the smart guys if yall know a way please share.

I'm not aware of this sensor, when does it normally kick in?

 

How much you guys would you spend on an electronic device that would keep the engine idling at 1000 rpm (or any other idle speed of you choice)?

Yea i would pay to get a device that would increase the idle I would want to be sure that it would not have any detrimental affect. Hook us up dude--everyone does know that this engine uses a lot more gas at 850k idle than a 1k idle

the servo is all electric, so no luck there.

you could drill a hole in the throttle plate, which might work, but the PCM would likely throw a fit.

not trying to blow your trade secrets, but what are you thinking about doing?

 

I'll test my idea first. I've ordered some electronic parts today. Will test later.
Depending on demand and costs, I might just share it as an electronic DIY.
Also, I'm waiting to see whether an engine mount replacement solve the poor idle I'm experiencing on my car. I have the feeling, based on past experience, that the engine mount replacement, if applicable on my car, is not going to cure it completely.

However, I can tell what won't work and why :
- drilling a hole in the T/B plate : as it's the ETB that's also controlling idle, it will compensate (by closing half a degree or so) to obtain the idle speed that's has been calibrated in the PCM.
- mechanically blocking the pedal at a slightly higher position : firstl, good luck to achieve that. Secondly, by changing the Pedal Position Sensor position, you'l actually force the PCM strategy out of idle mode and into run mode. No more closed loop RPM-based idle control.
- mechanically blocking the T/B plate at a slightly more opened position : don't know what it wil do, but I guess the system won't like it. The DC motor might try to force it to close and burn or trigger a CEL or a default (limp home) mode. ETB limp home mode = T/B plate opened at neutral position (abou 7-14%), just enough to crawl off the motorway...

Any other idea?

I think the idle speed was purposedly tuned that way to save fuel when idle, why mess with it unless you are experiencing near stalling.

I'll see if I can find the post I read concerning fuel use at idle--I think it was under a poor gas mileage one and a guy was talking about how he had to wait in traffic so much and was alarmed at how much gas the car was using during these waits. Someone else responded with the fuel useage of idle vs 1 1.5k and had the facts.
Increased idle speed to me is not about gas economy. Its about the car being much smoother. That was my oridginal point. The gas consumption was just a sideline discussion.

It would also be nice to keep the car from switching the firing order if nothing else.

Chalk me up as another person who'd pay $100 for a piece that would set the idle at 1k. (assuming it wasn't impossible to install)
