Over-revving engine?

I got a little over-excited coming out of a toll booth and took the car up to 10,500 RPMs in 1st gear. I tried to disengage first, and it stuck so I took my foot off the gas immediately and then was able to switch to second gears once the RPMs dropped below 10K. There were no apparent side effects, smells, etc. I had around 2K miles at the time. Does anyone think I caused any serious harm to the car?

I'm a little curious, how did you get the engine to rev beyond the rev limiter?

Maybe I only hit 10K, or 9500, in reality but the tach needle went further. All I know is I redlined the car for 1-2 seconds (could not hear the beep) and when I looked at the tach I was surprised at how high it was.

Post No problems

Done that a couple of times. Someone posted that taking these rotary engines to redline and beyond is part of the mandatory engine cleaning procedure:D . Who am i to argue with the RX experts on this forum. I am more than happy to comply.

The beep is very very soft. You have to have the windows rolled up, the moon closed, and the radio off in order to hear it.

Considering "they say" that the Renesis can go to ~15k RPM without damage, I don't get too worried when I hear the beep. It's just the Queen reminding me that she likes to be driven hard and put away wet.

When you say "it stuck", I think that was actually the fuel cutoff. I believe that it's variable - depending on engine temp and other factors.

When you consider that it's smooth as butter at 9,500RPM, I'd say there's plenty of headroom for you overexhuberant moments.

I experienced the rev-limiter for the first time today (on the 8). Plenty of redlines before but I had not managed to find the rev-limiter.

It's somewhere deep in the red section of the tach.. looked like right on 10k or something - man things sound nice up there.

This engine does rev smooth, 10k seems no more effort to the engine than 6k does and the rev limiter is very nice, not abrupt like I expected it to be. I suppose that's something the new fancy engine computer does very well.

Simon.

Cool How about 13.5k?.....

Hitting the redline or the limiter should not do you any harm....

I think I hit above 13,000 yesterday and it didn't SEEM to do any damage!

No, it's not impossible, just pretty stupid.... You just pull out to overtake in sixth, a quick downshift to fourth for some 'blow-by' and instead of fourth you jam it into second. Voila! 13k++!!

I will try not to do THAT again.

I blew my old celica gts sky high with a miss shift at around 6000 miles.5th to 2nd instead of 5th to 4th.I only went maybe 800 rpms over redline and it twisted pretty bad.I do believe the rotary in the 8 is more then capable of 12k at least as smooth as it feels at 9k.

thank light rotors, light apex seals (two peices of tippy goodness :D), and a strong e-shaft for fortitude under that kind of duress... i suppose Boowana really wasn't getting fed BS about that testing

this has really, really, REALLY nice implications for tuning to all-motor heaven... *muah ha ha ha haaa* [/evil laugh]

Only an upshift, never a downshift. And the upshift isn't because I can't drive a manual, there seems to be a syncro problem if you shift too quick at the redline from 1st to 2nd. I've taken it to the rev limiter a few times, maybe 9.5K or so, it's very smooth and seems like it can handle 10K no problem. How does it feel at 13K?

I read a few months back on some japanese article that the mazda mechanics were happy to release the car with a redline of 11k, so given that i'm sure it can handle that and more...if it makes any difference..

who cares, we have warranty baby!

Just because it didn't blow up immediately doesn't mean that the rev past redline didn't do any damage. All that kind of abuse is cumulative. Now when the Renesis holds up as well as the old 13B in the Star Mazda series, then we'll have reason to be excited.
