omg ...warning light..help help

i was driving my 8 down to utah ....the first 3 hours were ok ...after that , the oil warning light came on ....i was like...oh **** .....i thought my oil was low and when i check it , it was considerably low...so i bought a 5w20 shell oil to top it up ...

as i was driving for the rest of the 9 hours , it kept coming on ....i was able to make it go away by stepping the clutch and wait till the rev goes down to 1000 rpm ...it disappears ...then i put it back in gear ...

i realized if i drive 80 or below , it wont come on ...but if i drive more than 80 for 30 seconds , it WILL APPEAR !!! [PICS ATTACHED!]

anyone know whats going on ? i dont want my 8 to break down when i drive back on friday ~please please please

Are you in Utah now? Provo/Orem area?

I'd take it to Legacy Mazda, on University Parkway Blvd.

Is it under warranty?

Otherwise, check for leaks. See if the filter is screwed-on tight. If you can't find a leak, it means it probably went out the tailpipe. Maybe an OMP malfunction??

Is it really low when it comes on after you drive over 80?

What did the dipstick read?

A) Before you added oil.
B) Right after you added oil, and how much did you add?
C) What does it read right now with the intermittent light?

With that we might be able to help you out more. Could be as simple as a sensor malfunction. If i were to guess, I think you are probably still low. Could be wrong though.

before add = 2/10
after add half bottle and drive 200 miles till I have to get gas again = 1/2
pour everything else in and drove another 400+ miles = no idea yet ... Will check after this and post as edit

I'm now at Utah ... 2 miles from byu ...I recently install k&n typhoon v2 two weeks ago .... Would that have cause it ? If I take it to the dealership, would they void my warranty becoz I changed the intake ? I have extended warranty

if it is an 04 and the oil pan was not updated it will do that usually in the 70 to 76 mph range. you just have to put more oil in it..

you need to understand that the low to top of the oil fill on the dip stick is 1.75 qts..

so if it was real low and you put a qt in, well you barely put a dent in it..

also there is a tsb for the issue..

beers

Yes, keep extra oil in the car.

Yes, check the oil every second fill-up. (every fill-up if driving track-days or sustained high revs)

Yes, keep the oil level between 3/4 and just under full on the 04 dipstick...

It won't do any harm as long as you don't become complacent to your ill-mannered warning light and continue to check your oil level often.

For your sanity, and ease of potential resale, you should get it done however.

Safe trip.

Man, that is BS. This is a known defective part with a TSB. It should have been replaced 4 years ago. Mazda owe you a new oil pan, under warranty. It is not a wear item!

^+1............get it done when you can and check that oil often, but don't overfill either.
