Oil Change?

Hello,

I bought an 2006 RX-8 with 16800km on it back in October. I'm coming up on 21000km and I need to do an oil change.

What type of oil should I get? When you go to the garages, they all just state 5W30 or something. I would like to know if synthetic would be better or a different type?

I live in Canada (Toronto area), so it gets quite cold here (-35 celius at times).

What would be the best option for me? This is my first rotary engine.

I did try searching but I was getting a lot of crap titles in the search.

Thank you to the others that actually helped here.

So the concensus is not to go synthetic?

Ha!

Welcome to the rotary. The Synthetic vs. Non-synthetic debate has raged for decades. There is anything but a consensus.

I've always wondered why we're allowed to argue about synthetic vs non-synthetic here, when forum rules bar other religious debates.

So its up to you.

i would use castrol gtx 5w20. It never gets that hot in canada anyways and 5w20 will do the job fine. Plus your car is an 06 its still under warranty. If anything happens and your dealer asks you for proof of oil change they will not honor the warranty if they see you put anything else than 5w20.

Im in montreal i use 5w20 and I don't premix. Never had a problem

Im not sure about Canada but.

in the USA market, there is a difference between the word "Required" and "Recommended"

13z-72 best on the market.....

If you need to ask, do yourself a favor and use 5w-20 or 5w-30 conventional

What if the dealer puts in the 5w30, like mine does? Receipts for the last couple of years all say 5w30. I don't think they're out to void my warranty.

As stated above, "recommended" does NOT mean "required". The manual RECOMMENDS 5w-20, it doesn't require it. If the dealer pulls that BS then you pull out a dictionary

Thanks, I really appreciate the help.

My warranty expires in July. I'm more concerned what is best for the car.

Ok... So Castrol GTX it is:

5w20
or
5w30

There seems to be a mix here. My understanding is 30 would be thicker in the cold and "cling" to engine parts better. Is that right?

During a new england winter I use 5w20 or 5w30 as it flows better when cold. During the summer I will be using 10w30 or 0w40, havent decided yet.
