OBD Scanner Software ~?

Im looking for OBD scanner, Since sCANLyser does not work with my XP 64 computer at ALL ! Most likely due to the USB to Serial Bus adapter. but oh well, my laptop does not have a serial port and even the newest beta does not solve the XP 64 crashing problem. So Im looking for other OBD Scanner solutions

I found Harrison R&D CanScan, and Autotap, both sound like most *completed* software. Both have USB port (I dont have serial on my laptop, so I need USB to avoid problems)

I searched and it seems that the last *reported* problems with Harrison software was a *long* while ago. For those who have it, how does the newest version of the software perform ?

I dont think anyone on this forum has AutoTap software. but it sounds like their software should be more stable than Harrison's

Any feedback will be much appreciated

I have one of the older non-Apex versions of the Harrison OBD+CAN unit and it works fairly well. It had acted a little quirky about connecting with me before, but it has always worked.

I've got one of the later non-Apex Harrison CAN systems, circa Fall 2006. Not the very latest version, but close. usb.

It works well. Slight quirk in that the primary software uses a separate driver, while the RX-8 software is self-standing. If you switch from one to the other (forget which order), you need to reboot.

Support is outstanding. Any issues, and you'll get a quick personal reply from Dan. He won't quit until you're satisfied.

If I had to do it over, though, I'd probably get a scangage. I really like the idea of the computer interface and the possibility of logging data, but dragging the laptop out to the garage, finding a place to set it down, running the cables, etc., is a nuisance. Scangage looks nice in that it's self contained for quick code reads, but you can still do the computer deal.

I got a pocket scanner just to pull codes and erase codes *on the fly*

but I also want a software that *work* if I want to trouble shoot something more serious (like monitor something)

So I guess people like Harrison more huh ? ...

i was having problems... however version 4.20R8 seems to have solved pretty much all of them. The latest enhanced package also works tons better then the original program did.

Keep the pocket scanner for when you just need to pull a code without making a megillah of it.

Get the usb Harrison. It will display everything and log data. It uses a standard usb interface driver, so if you're a programmer you can even read the data stream into your own software.

I'll take your word for it.

Keep the Pocket Scanner, and get the OBDScan Apex.

Oh another question, is the Rx8 Addon worth it ? I had Rotor 1 and 2 Misfire. Now Im thinking it might have something to do with the plugs .... and I want to monitor it. but no one seems to have that Add on.

I've got the RX-8 add on. I'm not sure if it was worth it, but that's because the whole system never became as much of a plaything as I thought it would. The add on is kind of fun, and does stuff like show the actual tire pressures. But the incompatibility between it and the primary software is a nuisance. Check with Dan on whether that's still the case for the new system.

FWIW, this system paid for itself the day the CEL came on. It was just the P0455 gas cap thing. Being able to pull that, know what it was, and *not* have to **** away the next morning with a panic trip to the dealer was worth its weight in gold.
