OBD II scanner won't pull code-CEL

I tried using a scanner to pull the code for my recent CEL, and the scanner will not 'connect/communicate' with the vehicle. Used scanner from Advanced Auto, scanner had been used earlier today and worked fine according to the rep. After several attempts it keeps reading "can not connect with vehicle, check connections." All connections were checked and were ok.

Any ideas as to why the scanner wouldn't work?

Had CEL a couple of weeks ago and it went away after a few driving cycles. It just came back yesterday. I don't notice any changes in drivability or anything else. I do have a Supercat, I hope it is not failing on me already.

Any ideas before I go to the dealer? I guess I could try another shop's scanner just to be sure...?

Thanks.

Scanner must be able to read the 'CANBUS' protocol, many don't.

My ebay cheapie ($88) does......

Sounds like your branch may have pulled the dangly wires from the secondary O2 sensor.

When I got home I checked the O2 wires and they looked normal...?

In that case, you may need another cat, I've had two aftermarket cats, neither made it to the seventh month......

After more research on scanners, I think they had an older model of Actron (9140) scanner that doesn't support CAN. Looks like the autozone in the next town over has a newer one (actron 9175) that does support CAN. Wish me luck.

yup, got the 'ol P0420 code. Looks like the supercat is on its way out already. Cleared the code, hasn't come back yet. We shall see, might have to consider a straight pipe conversion. I don't have emissions testing, but not sure if I want to deal with the smell and constant CEL. Advice?

Just another update...

Spoke with Arie at RP, such a good guy, outstanding customer service. He agreed to take a used pipe and weld in the newest model of Cat. plus a hanger, and I'll just ship my old one back in the box, at no cost!!

Any reviews of the new, oval ceramic Cat.?

I borrowed my brothers OBD11 CP9135 and it will not pull up my code. comes up error and will not read after I recently installed a Turbo XS 3 in" exhaust system with race pipe that has a cat and bung for my stock O2 sensor. wondering if I get it cleared with newer OBD, suppose it may clear up ok? my engine is stock without mods.

GREAT service! I just installed this 3 weeks ago. Sounds great with my RB exhaust; I'll upload a video in the near future.

Having the same issue wish Advance and the other stores in my area would buy a damn newer scanner.

Oh well Torque and blue tooth dongle it is for me...

Also, this needs to be sticky info.
