Noob has a quick question...Appreciate help

Have a 2004 RX8 6 speed, my first Mazda. If I push 1st gear past 5500 rpm it won't let me shift to 2nd. Is there something wrong with my car or did Mazda decide to take all the fun out of first gear. If there is a governor is there a practical way to remove it? What are the consequences of removing it? Thanks for the help.

There is no governor on 1st gear. Does it grind or anything when you try to shift, do you have the clutch all the way down? My first gear goes all the way up to red line.

The second gear synchro tends to go out on 8's that were made in 04-05. This is a very common problem, I believe there is a TSB (technical service bulletin) for it.

Thanks guys, I'll talk to the guys at the shop. I have the clutch all the way down. Above 5500 it grinds real bad going into second. I have no problem in the other gears. As you might imagine it sucks only getting half of first gear, and then being sluggish in second until I get the rpms up again.

Yep, that sounds like the second gear synchro being bad. It's covered under warranty in some cases.

Mine does that too, it's the synchros I just granny shift that gear for now. Just pause for like half a second before you put it into second.

Apparently, we have short memories around here.

You either have a weakened clutch pedal, a bad slave cylinder, or both. The shifting issue and "bad" synchros are a SYMPTOM of a problem and not the problem, itself, and we have been dealing with this for 2 years now..... courtesy of yours truly.

The BEST situation is to get a new trans and new pedal under warranty and have the pedal reinforcement-welded.
