What year did the new updated starter come out? Do any of the series I's come with it from factory? I heard it came out in 2007, or is this wrong?

So since I have a 2007 RX-8 I should have the most updated starter already installed?

2009+ have superior starters. But you do have an upgraded one, compared to the earlier models.

My Mazda dealership is claiming I must upgrade my starter to an updated one so it improves my compression numbers. Without the starter they won't process my warranty claim for a new engine. Does that make sense?

Your starter could be going bad, hence they want to to upgrade. However, you can either test your current starter, you can get a used upgraded (06+) in good condition or get a new 06+

The starter doesn't change compression. If it's failing and turning too slowly to start the car, fine, but that's different from the engine warranty claim.

This is true, and I should have brought that up.

However, it does need to achieve at least 250rpm in order to operate minimum crank speed
