I had a Mazda6 (4 banger 2.0T) and thought it was a step back in performance to an older (2.5 non turbo) engine

Definitely. The CX-5 I had before the Mazda3 had the 2.5L and it was without a doubt better.

I bought and registered mine in 2004. I have yet to get jack diddly from Mazda. All I ever get is coupons to change tires and oil and crap like that. Hell, I don't even know if there are any updates and such that would make my life super easier (if those words can go together).

You can go online to a website (I forget exactly which website but I think I went to my dealers website) and input your VIN# and it will tell you exactly what recalls you've completed and which ones you haven't. The site must've been my dealers website because I selected the recalls I wanted to fulfill and the site immediately had me schedule my appointment with the dealership. I don't get the notices in the mail either...

@ Sticky: Thanks, I did actually find that website and printed off three different recalls that need to be taken care of.

I believe this is the link you speak of http://www.mazdausa.com/owners/recalls

Ahh yes that was the website. Glad I could help!

I am so pleased. I submitted a copy of my dealership receipt for all work done to fix my leaking tank seals for $518.60 AND received a check from Mazda today for that exact amount. I have been fully compensated for the original repair. Took about a month as I recall?

Mazda is awesome = as is my 2004 RX8!!

That's awesome! The issue with my fuel pump isn't even covered under the warranty, yet Mazda is covering everything as well. A new fuel pump! I still won't trust them with my rotary engine, but this certainly helps my view of Mazda.

Draven99984 03-18-2017 11:02 PM

Anyone think they will do the recall right away if I show them my tank is LEAKING?

gwilliams6 03-19-2017 06:59 AM

that seems to be the case. If upon inspection the tank is leaking, they do the fix right away, otherwise they wait until parts are more available and then do the fix. That is what my dealer is doing.

Noticed that the repair requires that the gas level be under 1/4 tank or they will drain the gas out. I wonder will they give you a gas card in return. :uhh:

Just make sure you don't go in with full tank of gas.

Well, they have to drain it into somewhere. Presumably, they should be able to just put it back into the tank when they're done.

gwilliams6 03-25-2017 10:46 PM

depending into what container they drain it and store it, you might NOT want them to put it back into your tank and engine. lol

gwilliams6 04-29-2017 12:21 PM

Just had my recall done by my dealer, new fuel pump rings, gaskets, and new improved fuel tank insulation pads (all parts come together as a single Mazda part number. for the complete recall kit). I took my car in with 1/4 tank of gas and the techs thanked me for that. The only time I run it that low.

I always knew poor fuel tank insulation was a cause of these rings cracking/leaking and Series 1 fuel pumps overheating and dying prematurely, with the hot exhaust system running right through the middle of our saddle-style fuel tanks.

I had a Series 2 pump installed after my last Series 1 pump failure. (Series 1 pump was a poorer design than the different design and manufacturer used for the improved Series 2 pump).

TheWyvern 05-01-2017 01:19 PM

Silly question: does Mazda only honor recalls if you're the original owner or are they obligated regardless, so long as you own their vehicle?

ASH8 05-01-2017 05:04 PM

All car brands have to honor ANY recalls, provided they can contact the existing owner.

JamesD31 05-09-2017 02:23 PM

Just brought mine in for the passenger side airbag recall and the fuel pump recall. Lucky I mentioned the fuel pump recall since he didn't see it right away on the computer.

gwilliams6 05-10-2017 07:18 AM

Not actually a pump recall. They replace the fuel pump retaining rings and gaskets, and replace the fuel tank insulation pads. Had mine done recently. Be sure to take your car in with only 1/4 tank of gas, or they will have to drain fuel to work on it.

RotoScooter 05-10-2017 10:08 AM

yep...

Fake News? Alternative Facts???

AFAIK there is no FUEL PUMP recall. Only the MOUNTING RINGS are in recall.
This would be great news if true. I'd love a new fuel pump though...

akatayama 08-11-2017 03:17 AM

Well I just took in my '04 Rx-8 to the dealer today for the 2 airbag recalls, and was surprised they were also ready to do the fuel pump ring/tank insulation recall and the recent control arm recall. (I was under the impression parts weren't available yet for the latter two.)

Anyway what they first estimated at 4 hours stretched to the entire day, only to be told it'll be an overnight job. I had a chance to talk with the tech at the end of the day as he was working on my car. He had already finished the air bag recalls; it was the fuel pump work that was taking all of the time and was in the middle of, and he hadn't gotten to the control arm recall yet. (Puzzled at that since I didn't think it should take so long to pull the fuel pump, having once removed it myself to inspect the filter.) When I saw him he had both rings off and was inspecting the main (driver's side) fuel pump on the bench.

He said I'll be getting a new fuel pump, which surprised me as I never read that as being part of the recall. Apparently during his inspection he noticed a crack in the barbed output hose bibb, which perhaps is another heat-induced failure mode and hence could be part of the recall - or I just lucked out with this dealer.

I'll find out soon enough when I pick it up tomorrow, but they didn't mention a possible charge tonight so I'm sure that it'll all be covered.

RotaryMachineRx 08-11-2017 09:12 AM

I got this updated recall in the mail for the fuel pump rings and it also NOW states that the fuel filter body will be replaced...... does that mean the entire fuel pump assembly with fuel pump? Obviously I'd want them to put my high flow pump back in the new assembly rather than a new stock pump. I have mine modified with the melted pop off valve for the high flow pump, I wonder if they will modify the new assembly for me while they're in there.... but IMO this recall is worth it just for the new rings as mine has taken a beating over the last decade!

Yup, I got a new fuel pump out of them as well for free. Don't know what's going on with Mazda but I guess I'm going back for the control arm recall soon...

akatayama 08-11-2017 02:26 PM

It appears the latest recall notice refers to "...replace the fuel pump filter body with a modified one to address the concern of recall 1017E." This is to address "the deterioration of discharge pipe to progress, leading to a crack in the pipe and subsequent fuel leak, which may increase a risk of fire."

This confuses me - note they are not saying "replace the fuel pump" but rather "replace the fuel pump filter body". Could the replacement here be at the sub-assembly level? (It struck me as odd when I saw the tech poking at the removed fuel pump as if he were trying to take it further apart, which wouldn't be necessary to inspect the discharge pipe alone.) And isn't the fuel filter simply the tiny sock at the bottom of the fuel pump assembly and not part of a larger filter assembly, shown here when I last removed it to inspect the filter?

While I can't imagine that, what then to make of the odd wording in the recall notice? Hope to clarify all when the work finishes later today.

Fuel filter at bottom of fuel pump assembly after removing it from its housing...

im curious how long you had to wait for an appt? Did they say they were going to order the parts ahead of time? thanks

akatayama 08-11-2017 03:27 PM

They scheduled the appointment only a week after I contacted them. At the time I only expected them to schedule the two air bag recalls, but was surprised they were ready to do all four (both air bags + fuel pump + lower control arm) recalls.

Just be ready for a 2 day repair depending on your exact mix of recalls.
