Generally, try keeping the revs over 2,000. Definitely over 1,500 unless of course you aren't really using the engine to drive the car. I.e. down hill.
Rev to red line at least once a month.
-
Do - Enjoy your car, on-ramps and off ramps are much fun.
Don't - Flipping of cops and waving black water guns in there general direction.
-
You'll get more from people who have had their 8's longer than I
Oh, and Welcome!
EDIT - just noticed it's a used car, deleted by new car oriented comments

you know theres a Search Button ?
Ahhh I be nice today and tell ya some basics
I assume that you got it from some place other than a Mazda Dealer, cuz it's gotta be a used car since it has 18K miles on it.
So first thing u gotta do is.
Try to get the dealer to do all TSB that applies to your car, go here
http://www.finishlineperformance.com...ins_index.html
Especially the Engine Crank/No Start TSB, GET NEW PLUGS AND STARTER, You'll see a BIG differents.
After the above, change the engine oil, Gear oil and Rear Differential oil.
For now ...

Did you get a Manual in the glove box. If so please read it, most things you need to know are in it. Did you know you have to add oil between changes? Its a oil injected engine. If you dont have one you can down-load it and learn alot.

Power!!
Don't flood the engine. The easiest way to avoid it is to make sure the car warms up before you shut it down. Never shut it down cold even if only moving it around in the driveway. Trust us. I and may others on the forum have unintentionally flooded the engine and it's a pain in the ****. You have to get it towed to a dealer so they can de-flood the car.
Check the oil level at least every 1000 miles. It uses oil in it's normal combustion cycle so you will burn a quart or two between oil changes. It will burn more the harder you drive it.
Definitely rev it up. It keeps the carbon buildup in the engine down. I don't shift below 4K even around town.
Last I would definitely bring it to a dealer and have them check to make sure all the recalls are done and you have the latest PCM flash for the vehicle. These should all be at no cost to you.
As far as modifications that's a nebulous question that requires the use of the search button as you can only answer that one yourself.
