CO New Owner

hey guys, i just got a 2006 RX8, and I've been looking over the site for the most part. i love this car, however, i also drove a WRX... If i wanted to upgrade the performance, what steps should i go in and what items are recommended? i came from a 2005 Mustang GT, i had a tuner for it, and i had new gears in it, intake and thicker tires... so a rotary engine is a COMPLETELY new ball of wax for me. and i also have a few extra questions. is the rotary engine reliable and strong with stock parts to handle extra power? what is usually the mileage clock out for an engine failure. is there any failure points that i should worry about? the usual items i go to work on first in intake, then exhaust, then slowly beginning to beef the engine for either N/A applications or Forced Induction. so enough of my ramblings, i am looking forward to hearing every ones input.

I think I'll give you the gist of what "everyone's input" will be: SEARCH

Check out the "Performance Upgrades" and "Major Horsepower" sub-forums. Read the stickies and and other such topics to decide what's best for you and your goals... This has been covered many times since the car was released back in 2003

If you want any meaningful HP gain from the car your two options are nitrous and turbo/supercharger. Nothing else really gives anything decent other than a midpipe but even then your look at between 5 and 10 hp, probably depending on a tune or not.

As far as engine failures.... Some have got multiple engines replaced in 100k miles, some only one and a few are on the original. So be prepared for a new engine, and get a compression check to find out how yours is. If you have no maintenance records then you will most likely not be eligible for the 8yr/100k mile warranty on the engine.

If you have any questions, search for the rest.

What others said...ultimately it'll either be a turbo or sc, you can get one from pettit racing among others...expect to drop at least $6k

Keep in mind our cars were never meant to be a straight line drag car, this is obvious when someone in a mustang tries to take you in the twisties! =)
