new flash out?

ok i posted my story on another site and im gonna cut and paste some here so maybe i can get some ideas/comments on this

first post i put out on 1/8/06

Ok its been over a week since i have driven my car.....holidays, being sick, and bad weather....so i take her out today to run some errands with my wife.....everything was fine until we were leaving target (where i bought an awesome little toy rx-8) and i get on to the highway.....the car was fully warmed up and it was about 50 degrees today......i start bringing her up to speed and around 6k she felt hesitant and boggish.....so i got up to highway speed and it was fine.....then a scion tc came up from behind aweful fast and i thought he wanted to get some spirited driving in...i thought what the hell there werent many cars on the road so i dropped it to 3rd gear doing 60 and took off...the car screamed up to redline and the CEL started flashing......kinda freaked me out a little because i have driven her hard and it never came on before.......i noticed that it was a little hard to start when i first started her this morning but i figured it was normal.....any thoughts?.....im bringing her to the dealer tomorrow to get it checked out

so i was told to look for a mis and guess what....it was! soooooooo.....

this post was this afternoon.................

Ok i just got off the phone with Gil over at Ramsey Mazda and he told me that there was a new TSB that just came out this week regarding the plugs and they changed my plugs (at no cost to me) and just in case did a compression test on the car(which i didnt even ask for) and he said the car is in perfect runnning condition (all within spec) now and its allot stronger....he also mentioned jokingly that they did the compression check while the car was warm!......i will ask if he has a copy of the tsb he can give me so i can double check how new it is and if its not published yet....i will also ask him for the results of the compression test so i can double check those too....not that i dont trust them but just for peace of mind and to educate others here

and when i finally got home i posted this...................

ok im back from the dealer and initial feelings are that my car is a totally different beast......there is a new TSB out there whick was released on 1/4/06 and i seen it with my own eyes....they wouldnt let me take a copy home but that was the date on the top of the paper....the tsb # is 01-004-05 and this is what my work order says

performed tsb 01-004-05 replace lead spark plugs, starter, update pcm flash
xx610xr3 1.1

so there is also a new flash out there...

i looked at http://www.finishlineperformance.com...ins_index.html

didnt see anything that looked like the bulletin this guy showed me so it must be so new they didnt upload it into their site

the car feels allot more responsive to throttle and anything past 6k feels like you get pinned back in your seat now....I FELT TORQUE!!!........not sure if the starter was part of this tsb or part of another one and they were joined but no hard start at all.....i also did get a copy of the compression test but it looks nothing like 8's test....i took a pic for every one to review and please some one let me know what it means in english!

TSB: 01-004/05
2004-2005 RX-8 - ENGINE CRANKS NO START

NOTE: This bulletin replaces 01-011/04. Please update your records accordingly.
BULLETIN NOTE

*

This bulletin supersedes the previous bulletin 01-004/05, issued 11/29/05. The WARRANTY INFORMATION has been changed.

APPLICABLE MODEL(S) / VINS

2004-2005 RX-8
DESCRIPTION

Some vehicles may experience difficulty starting (cranks no start). This may occur after driving the vehicle a short distance without engine reaching normal operating temperature. Examples: starting a vehicle and moving it to wash it, engine stall due to mis-application of clutch then restart. This commonly occurs at port facilities or dealer lots where vehicles are frequently started cold, moved for short distances and then turned off. This concern may also occur due to low cranking RPM during engine starting.

A cranks, no start condition may be caused by fuel flooding resulting in either fouled spark plugs or lower than normal compression. Carefully follow REPAIR PROCEDURE "A" and refer to VIN application to determine necessary repair action.

The following vehicle mass production changes have been implemented to improve starting performance:

*

PCM calibration - The PCM calibration was modified to reduce fuel injection amount during cold conditions. PCM calibration was modified in vehicle production on 3/12/04.
*

Battery - A higher capacity battery was introduced (6/1/04).
*

Engine starter - Revised to increase cranking compression at engine start. Implemented into vehicle production 11/8/04 (For AT models), 12/1/04 (For MT models).
*

Leading spark plugs - The leading spark plugs have been revised to reduce the possibilities of fuel flooding at cold engine start. Revised leading spark plugs were implemented in vehicle production on 3/22/05.

blah blah blah its the original cranks no start tsb that has been updated a couple of times. it has not been updated recently. the tech is il-informed if he believes this just came out. the flash it talked about originally was M flash and as always it means or what ever is newest. there is not any newer flash than the one you got with the thermal damage recall.

the only thing that changed in the update was the amount they are allowed to claim when they do the work.

toca 01-10-2006 06:32 PM

so if i take my car in for a oil change that will replace the plugs and new flash or do i need something wrong with it

zoom44 01-10-2006 06:37 PM

ther ei sno newer flash than what your car should be on from the recall.

chrism 01-10-2006 06:38 PM

the one i saw didnt look like that and had pictures of new spark plugs....there is a new type of 4 prong plug that they replaced.....and i saw a date of 1/4/06 on the top of the paperwork

chrism 01-10-2006 06:39 PM

also can some one explain the paperwork they gave me regarding compression?

zoom44 01-10-2006 10:10 PM

i dont care what the date said on their paper tha tis the most recent revisionof that bulletin. what i posted was just acut and paste of the first bit. the "*" is where there would be pics in the bulletin.

zoom44 01-10-2006 10:14 PM

that is the first time someone has posted teh actual results of the compression test wholly right off the bat. thank you. it shows you the compression they found for each rotor face and the rpms they were cranking when those were measured. those are very good compression results. the numbers lower show the variance within rotor 1 and the variance between rotor 1 and rotor 2. i gotta hang it up for the night but if someone hasnt done so by tomorrow ill post the graph showing the acceptable compression range - its already posted around here somewhere.

By "4 prong plug" do you mean there were 4 electrodes, or did it look more like the pic below (4 notches in the nose). The notched plugs have been out for a while in response to the old flooding issues. The notches allow any raw fuel to more easily be purged from the recess in the plug.

chrism 01-11-2006 05:29 AM

nope the plugs had 4 electrodes on it and didnt look like that one....the dealer told me the cost were around 145 each for the plugs had they not been covered....i didnt see any notches in the new plug

thanks team.

here is the full version ,with the pics etc,of the tsb as you can see it was last updated on Dec 1st and as i posted above only the warranty info has changed from the previous version.

there simply isnt any other newer plug listed anywhere than what is on this bulletin

TeamRX8 01-11-2006 12:41 PM

there's no 4-electrode plug that I'm aware of, if you can produce a part number ....

Astounding. The only thing I can think of to account for such cost is using iridium in the (4) side electrodes as well. Lol, these better be lifetime plugs :uhh:

zoom44 01-11-2006 01:20 PM

this isnt the first person to mention this 14x spark plug- thre was this thread the otehr day

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...hlight=iridium

talked about iridium 149 dollar plugs....

Nemesis8 01-11-2006 01:23 PM

So what is the truth on this?

alcimedes 01-11-2006 01:24 PM

I just had this done last week, now I'm tempted to pull one of the plugs out and take a pic, see what it looks like, although they didn't tell me they were putting in $150 plugs either, so maybe I got the old standby.

Someone who got these uber expensive plugs (for sure) want to take some photos of them?

chrism 01-11-2006 03:13 PM

see im not crazy!.....there is a newer tsb out there but it just hasnt been published to the public yet

zoom44 01-11-2006 03:45 PM

i dont get mine from the public- it hasnt been published to the dealers yet either. is there a part number on your paperwork for these plugs?

Nemesis8 01-11-2006 04:10 PM

Hey, look what Maztech posted here: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/new-starter-new-sound-79511/page2/

zoom44 01-11-2006 04:14 PM

hes talkign about the update to the old one i posted

chrism 01-11-2006 04:53 PM
