my 8 is half dead

it first happend on friday night. i was at a stop light and my car start shaking at idle, the shaking is pretty bad. then check engine light started to flash. i rev the car to about 3k rpm and its very slow and lagging, then the car just died. i checked the engine oil and all the fluid its all normal.

i was only 1 mile away from home so i started the car again, and took a few seconds to start, and very hard and slow to move, feels like i have 2 HP coming out from the engine.

next day morning, i started the car, it was fine. then on my way to the dealer, the CEl start flashing again and it just felt like i have no power again. a small freeway over pass my car will slow down because not enough power or something. after i get out of the freeway at every stop light my car will shake really bad. it died on me once, and i pop it to gear and rolling started my car again. i barely made it to the dealer. my car been sitting there till now. dealer said they will tell me what is wrong by the end of today if is possible.

anyone else had the same problem before?

TIA

2004 37k miles

Sounds like a blown mass air flow sensor. Or it could be something else that triggered the cel and the ecu threw your car in limp mode.

your rx-8 seems like it has a case of "wtf-pwned".

its a shame that problems like these are all too common with this car. i am not alone in my opinion that this is a very cheaply manufactured vehicle that wears the badge of "rotary" as its primary selling point. just imagine the rx-8 having been made the same but with a piston engine...everyone would be flaming the car for its cheap quality (and i'm not talking about how it has a shiny paint coat... ) and for how often it has problems.

mazda is lucky that they mixed poor quality and mediocre reliability with a rotary engine
it keeps them away from bankruptcy

son, let me tell you my honest opinion.

from the looks of your sig, it seems that you previously drove a WRX before switching to an rx-8. now if i could go back in time with all that i have learned now and i had to choose between a WRX or an RX-8, i'd ****** that WRX in the blink of an eye.

for all you forum browsers that are just looking through posts and thinking about buying an rx-8, DON'T DO IT IF YOU DONT HAVE TO!!!!

don't be a fool like me who had the option of having his parents buy for him either
1) Toyota Supra TT
or
2) Mazda RX-8 Rotary Performance!

and went and chose the rx-8....

learn from my mistakes!!!!

I'm not sure what year or mileage you have but it sounds like the coils are bad.

Mikey06 -

Son, your last twenty (I don't care to read any more) posts are all in a trollish vein.

Son, either man-up and admit you don't like your 8,
you are sorry you chose the 8 when your parents offered to buy you a Supra (do they still make them?)
or, son, just get over it....

Son, it's getting O L D . . . . . . .

Only someone that has zero understanding or appreciation for chassis, suspension and brake architecture would make such uneducated statements.

the dealer called me and told me that is because the spark plug and coil.

its not going to cover by warranty?!?! he said its wear and tear, so i ask him if every 37k miles i have to spend 800+ dollar on wear and tear isnt this car is too much to take care?

anyone know if it suppose to be cover under warranty? and how often should i change the spark plugs? the car has 37k miles on it.

yes, i loved the wrx and i still LOVE it. its so much faster than my 8. even though sometimes i miss the speed when i try to pass some cars on the freeway, but i like the 8 cruising around and bose sound system, the RWD. the rx8 is a high maintain car, and high means really high. but i love taking care of my car, so i have been taking good care of it. the reason why its broken down like this is because this is a used car. i learned my mistake for buying a used 04, im sure everyone will agree to this. i should have add $3000 to get a 07 but not grandtouring.

i regret getting an 04 rx8, but i dont regret getting an rx8.

If it was under warranty, then 2 x 37k would be out of warranty anyway.

As if all the recalls were done to the car. If not the coils should be covered. The sparks, it's a bit soon, but buy them from one of our venders and save a few hundred from the dealer. There was another member on this board with the same problem and he got his stuff done under warrenty too.

Mike06 got his car for free rite ? why bitch ?

I started working as a part time when I was 12, yep, 12.

Not that I need money or anything, but my parents taught me that if I wanna get something, I have to go out and earn it on my own.

Its not a bad idea is it ?

If you own something, enjoy it, if you dont like it, dump it. dont need to talk crap about it. Sometimes looks crappy to you might look wonderful in other's eyes.

To the OP : You should check the CAT. Do you still have warranty ? Bumper to Bumper ? Powertrain ?

This is a very true statement and very well stated about the older/used RX8's. The newer models 06-08 have far less problems. I wish you the best with your 8.

+1

The reason he's bitchin' is because mommy and daddy don't feel like giving him a brand new car because he should already be happy getting a *frickin car* for free, no matter what.

God knows not many of us have been that pampered in life.

So lil'boy comes complaining on the boards... mommy got me the red robot for xmas! I wanted the blue one! bwa!

Life is tough eh... just sell it and get something else cryboy.

You can change the coils and the Spark plugs your self I wouldn`t pay the dealer $800 to do a job that would cost me $220 ish

The coils and plugs, if that is even the real problem, will only be the beginning. Next will be a clogged cat and then carboned-up ports and such. If the coils make it run well again, I would take the car out and hammer the **** out of it. Maybe run some SeaFoam through the engine, too.

so should i call the dealer and tell them that i dont want them to fix it anymore? and i should order those parts my self and even install it in another shop? $800 dollar is really alot of money for plugs and coil.

the price they told me is $68 dollar for each coil and $46 dollar for each spark plug
