Motor Oil Question, again
Hi All,
I stopped by at the local Mazda dealership to pick up some touch up paint for my 2007 velocity red RX8. I decided I might as well by the motor oil as well. So I asked if they had any. The guy comes back 3 minutes later with a Castrol GTX bottle, which I noticed says "5w-30". I ask: "Shouldn't I be using 5w-20 for the RX8?". So the guy goes back to look some more, but it turns out they only have one bottle sitting in the service garage. I did not buy the motor oil.
That being said, as I was driving back to work, I was wondering if that service department uses 5w-20 or 5w-30 (somehow I just forgot to ask them when I was there...)? From what I've been reading about the RX8s, I want to use 5w-30 (non-synthetic), but the USA manual says 5w-20, so I am worried if I will do anything bad to the car. How have people's cars been holding using either of these motor oils? I want to buy one ASAP. If it makes a difference, I live predominantly in Southern California.
By the way, this is my first car, and I am taking my first big step into auto maintenance to prolong the life of my RX8 as much as possible. Please be easy on me.

hey ec:
both of those oils will work just fine for your car. I run Castrol GTX 5-20, but I have seen many people run 5-30 without incident.

My 8 has been running off of 5w-30 since birth. 73,000mi without issue. This debate comes up quite a bit, and every time we all just agree to disagree. It's really just a matter of personal preference and luck.
