DYI:Trans Removal/clutch/lite flywheel
Well here is a quick line up of tools and what to do when pulling/installing the flywheel.
10mm (sockets)
12mm
14mm
15mm
17mm
19mm
21mm
2 1/8" (Flywheel socket) (from sears or snapon)
10,12,14,17 wrenches
extensions of all sizes
clutch allignment tool (3rd gen Rx-7 works)
Lift, trans jack, a friend is good to.
Thess are some basic tools you should have but list may contain tools not needed!
O.K.
shifter (4-10mm Nuts & 3-10mm Bolts for the shifter itself)
Unbolt main cat (3-15mm Nuts & 2-14mm Nuts)
Disconnect O2 Sensor (1-Plug)
Disconnect 4 connectors on trans 2-Black 2 White
2 under carrage braces (8-12mm Bolts)
Support trans*** with jack
front PPF bolts (4-21mm Bolts)
drive shaft (4-14mm Bolts & 4-14mmNuts)
starter (2-14mm Bolts & 1-14mm Nut and 14mm Wrench for Nut)
(Let the Start hang to the side!)
slave cyl. (2-12mm Bolts)
(Let the Slave Hang to the side next to the starter)
transmission bolts (5-14mm Bolts)
Trans Comes out You may need to wiggle up and down to get it out.
pressure plate bolts (6-14mm Bolts)
flywheel nut (1-2 1/8" Nut)
Put it back in reverse order!
Have fun:D

I don't think he really needs more words than this.. If you're going to DIY you should be able to perform this procedure with what he's given. If you need step by step instructions you probably shouldn't be doing this yourself anyway.

I disagree. A "DIY" need more rather than less information. While this is a start, it's not complete enough to match up to the other DIYs that members have been posting thus far. We at least need a couple of pics... heck, some people might start removing their rear differential without something to point them to where to start.
I'm moving this thread back out to the main Tech forum until we get a few more details. While I appreciate the effort, it needs just a bit more to be really useful.

You mention a lift. I assume you have a shop you can go to and work. I was wondering if there are places where you can put your own car on a lift and work on it yourself.

I disagree but you are the MOD so what ever floats your boat. If people are that clueless about cars then they need someone to do this job for them. I know I will post pics of the old(stock) flywheel just to please brain dead people.

If someone mistakes thier differential for thier tranny, maybe they dont belong under thier car with a wrench??
Personally, If I were to do this, I wouldn't want a 54 page step by step whith photos. What would be helpful is a detail of the trickier bits or things that are not obvious, with pics to help..
So, I agree that there COULD be more info on the posts but I don't feel that the original post is not useful just because it assumes a certain level of knowledge.

And what are the benefits of going to the light flywheel please? I know it's mentioned somewhere else, but it would be good to hear it again in this thread (or link to the other benefits thread).

The flywheel stores energy from the engine in the form of rotating mass. It helps smooth out roughness in idle and helps in the transition as you get underway from a stop.
A lightweight flywheel takes less energy to spin up to a given rpm so the energy that would otherwise be spent accelerating the rotating mass of the flywheel can instead be applied to accelerating the vehicle itself. The engine will also rev more quickly when out of gear.
The tradeoff is a degradation in driveability - more "touchy" getting into 1st gear; you need to apply more power and do it more accurately.

Since we are all fimiliar with the advanteges of a lighter flywheel and I've had them on other cars though I'm curious how the performance is with such a high reving engine. How much quicker would you say the RPMs are? What are your impressions so far?

I love the the flywheel. You really feel it up top. The low end may suffer but not to sure because I have not rode in a stock trim 8 in a while. But it really helps the car out.

Why not get a low moment of inertia clutch. That would help out shifting.
Is the flywheel actually lighter(keeping the same moment of inertia) or does it have a lower moment of inertia (and the same weight) or less weight and moment?
