Talking Japanese DYNO SPECS

Hi everyone, I am Geoff and this is my first thread posted on RX8 forum. I just got my RX8 on the ground and its running great.

I am from Hong Kong (China), before I came to US this summer, I a magazine named Option (its in Japanese and printed in Japan and is a very reliable source. You can go find it on the web, huge magazine that been aroudn for long time in Japan).

In this magazine was a dyno for the Japanese Version of the RX8. I read the graphs on the Dynos that were posted by other members on RX8 and their cars only hit 187 hp or so.

the Japanese Version hit over 217.0 ps at 9000rpm.

Damn.. there must be somethign wrong wiht our RX8's...

just one little thing, we all saw that there was a "saw tooth" starting from 6300 rpm or so, so did the Japanese versions.

Sorry I can;t post the graph, I dun hvae a scanner...

The Japanese Versions hit 180 ps when its at 6200... if that means anything to anyone.

The max torque is 20.1kg / m at 6370

Did anyone notice that they have 4 different RX-8 specs in Japan??

Check this out: http://www.rx-8.mazda.co.jp/spec05.html

Does anyone understand Japanese, and would tell me what the differences are between specs?

Thanks!

Alright, I figured one out!

The RX8-S is the 6MT we have, and Type-E is the automatic....and then there are another 2 models wich appear to be BASE models with the small 16" tires.

The beauty of using www.altavista.com translation service.

Option magazine is the most respected aftermarket magazine in the JDM market. I have both the magazine and video clip that shows the RX-8 power rating at 217ps. I am not sure whether or not that's a good thing though. The same source states the 350Z has 280ps, so maybe their dyno is corrected to engine power rather than at wheels.

Whatever the Japanese Dyno says, Artex in Japan did a side-by-side comparison of the 210ps 5MT and the 250ps 6MT and both were very similar.

The 5MT's results are okay but the 6MT is very similar to what we have here in the states.

The 6MT did a 7.04 sec 0-62.7 MPH run which is about 6.6 sec 0-60. It also did a 14.97 quarter mile.

The 210ps engine did almost identical results. It was also about equivalent to 6.6 sec 0-60. That ain't bad for speced 208 hp car.

Lets face it, the extra two ports in the 250ps engine aren't really helping.

Don't know how should one reply to the results.

Whether to say that the 210 is doing very well

or

to say that the 250 has done badly

The reason that the 350Z is listed as 280ps is that Japanese car manufacturers have to detune their cars to a max of 280ps. For instance, the us Supra (sorry, it's the one I know most about) has 325 crank hp, while the jap version, with the same parts, has 280ps (~280hp) at the crank. Just in case you wanted to know. Hope it helps someone.

The cars in Japan are not detuned, just underrated.

The 280 HP limit was a gentlemans agreement between auto companies to help keep insurance and registration costs down so that they could sell cars over there.

i believe there is a japanese law maxing horsepower at 280 for a stock car; i know that the m3 is also detuned for japanese markets

It's not a law, just an agreement between the car makers over there.

It's all about the insurance and registration fee's.

Go out and dyno one of those supposed 280 HP Skylines, Supras, or RX-7's and see what kind of power they are putting down.

If I remember correctly there were quite a few of the 280HP RX-7's dynoing at ~260+ RWHP.

That's not "detuned". The JDM Supra got smaller turbos, MAP sensed EFI, milder cam profile etc etc. The JDM Supra TT make 280HP at the flywheel, no more. They're not "de-tuned" or even under-rated, they make what they make. As an aside, they're also far more restricted. The turbine wheels of the turbos are bonded to the shaft and that bonding lets go if you try and push around 14psi.

People, largely the americans who never actually get these cars, seem to think that 280ps = 11ty billion HP. Fact is, there are plenty of cars that say they make 280ps because they actually do. The 350Z is another excellent example. There are heaps of cars that make a damn sight more power than the 280 (eg R34 Skyline GTR, Eunos Cosmo)
