Idling Issue :C w/Video HD

I've been having this issue recently and I'm scared of driving my vehicle because I don't want it to die out on me. I had my friend scan the "Check Engine" light with one of those scanners and it said it was the Mass Flow Sensor. We took the MAF out and blew out the dust, if there was any one it, and it didn't work. BUT, then we moved the car two feet up and it started working fine.

Now recently again it has started but this time I do not think it is the MAF. PLEASE HELP!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfqxQqxKc1U

I added annotations for this video as well hopefully it'll help - and it's in HD! Whoaaaa.

Jokes aside, if there are any questions please feel free to ask me!

Ok first off why are you revving that high when you just start the car and the coolant light is on?! Get the code read and post up here the specific code. I know most posts on here say clean the maf but the maf can also get damaged and need replaced not just cleaned. So that could be your issue. And unless you want to replace your engine do not rev the car that high when you just start it. The temp gauge showed it was at operating temperature but you cannot follow that guage. You still need to wait like 15 min or so before you redline it after the temp guage reaches that. Just to be safe. But read the code again and tell us what it is.

Yes the code........Please give us all the history on your car..year, model, miles, mods, service, ? Have you had a compression test done? How many miles on wires, plugs, coils? Have you done a decarbon cleaning?

I was driving it earlier for about 20 minutes and on my way back home it had been acting up like that :C . But I shall get the code as soon as possible, my friend said he'll bring his scanner.

Model: 2004 Mazda RX-8 GT
Mileage: 121561 KM (75534 Miles)
Mods? Only the GReddy SP2 Cat Back exhaust I believe (From owner before)
Service: None since purchase almost 2 years ago

I have not done a compression test nor a decarbon cleaning, and I am unsure of how much mileage has been put on the wires, plugs and coils. Sorry :C

From what i can see, you will need to change the coils, plugs, and wires as soon as possible. You might need to decarbon cleaning your engine, plus a compression test (if needed), only when the first part did not solve the problem.

Oh...one more thing, check the battery and the battery connections (make sure they are tightly secured), and the condition of the alternator as well.

No service? How about you add an oil change too. Hopefully you at least have been adding oil...

It ALMOST sounds like mine, except you can rev higher I think. Anyways, yes, it sounds like mine, which is acting up as well. For me, ending up that a coil wasn't producing spark. BUT please note that I never got the "Cylinder 2 Misfire 2" code until days after the car just sitting around. I started it up once, shut it down, and read the codes Multiple times (Turning ignition on/off) and on the last time I got 3 more codes.

I would recommend doing the same - Read the codes over and over again. Sometimes something new will pop up

Your cylinder 2 was misfiring?! Theres your problem right there! We don't mess with dem cylinder thingys. Lol no but I know what you are getting at. Coils can cause all sorts of problems. You need to keep up on that maintenance! This ain't no honda. If you don't keep on the maintenance all sorts of issues start coming up.

Okay! I'll need to check the code first to see what it has to say.

Okay! I'll see what a code says first, I called my friend but I haven't had a response from him yet.

Ok good! I was about to say you deserve anything wrong with it
But anyways hopefully it is just your coils causing a misfire like mentioned above. Hopefully that code will provide some good news!

LOL I say "Cylinder 2 Misfire" Just in case OP gets the same code and knows were on the same page. Oh and I know about maintenance, but unfortunately the coil just decided to kill itself. Oh well, I'm getting BHR Ignition anyways

P0441 is probably related with the gas cap and P0102 indicates problem with your MAF. You can find more information if you use the search button in this forum (just put your codes in and read the threads). A simpler way to find information is to use Google (for instance, Google P0102 rx8 and you should find some info).

Yeah I should have clarified. I was talking to the OP when I said you need to keep up with maintenance. Yeah I've heard of people's coils going bad at like ten thousand miles. I've never heard of BHR's coils failing though. I am going to switch next time I change my ignition system out.

But anyways to OP, you said you guys cleaned the MAF right? What all did you clean when you did that? Have you checked to make sure the connection is clicked in all the way?

HEYO! Sorry late reply, but yeah we cleaned it ALL the way. I bought some MAF cleaner and that didn't work

BUT, I remember my friend saying "If it's your MAF, hit the top of the sensor with the blunt end of a screw driver, hard; if your idle goes wonky then it's your MAF," I never tried that. But on the Sunday (a few days ago) I was coming back from my friend's place in my car. I hit the train tracks a little harder than usual, my suspension being stiff, it set off the issue again - I just coasted home because it was like 500 meters away LOL :P

I just purchased a new MAF today, from VIP Mazda in Abbotsford BC, and just installed it. My car had the check engine light for maybe about 15 minutes and now it works fine! On my way back home, from driving it around, I intentionally hit the train tracks a little harder than before and it didn't have that issue!

LASTLY, I think I may do some other checks with my vehicle at ForceFed in Langley to see if they find any issues with the engine (they specialize in rotaries).

Here's my receipt for the MAF @$95 before tax! It was a lot cheaper than Lordco or Fortins (they're like Pep Boys I think), they were asking $273 / $196

Here's something else too. VIP Mazda is at the Abbotsford Auto Mall, I saw two NISMO Edition 350z's at the Honda Dealership :P I thought it was really weird to see some limited edition cars at a Honda Dealership ... Anywho! PICS! Hahahaha

Thanks for all the help! If the issue comes up again then I'm screwed ahahaha
I shall post again on this thread! You guys were a huge help C:

Lol glad to hear that your problems are solved - And remember, these cars do not have "Cylinders", well at least so-to-speak they don't. Some will argue that you can consider it one, etc., but no none the less, there are no rotary-specific codes, so when I say "Cylinder" I mean "Rotor", only reason I say "Cylinder" is because that is what a code reader will tell you. Good luck!

I think it depends on how you describe cylindrical shape. no piston I totally agree.

I do like the nismo 350z. I think they are overpriced and I would never buy one but I like them. However that ragtop 350 is ugly as *****. But glad to hear you got it fixed. And a good price for the maf too.

Yeah it was kinda overpriced :/ ... I knoww!! That 350z ragtop is hella ugly! I prefer hard top vehicles or ones that aren't convertibles at all :P. The only convertible I would buy is a Honda S2000, but then I'd throw a Spoon hard top on haha! and thanks! The MAF was at a very good price! Waaaay better than paying 150+ :D

Old starter? Underpowered battery? I don't think so lol the battery is quite new, I think I'll need to clean the connections though because it seems like it's starting to accumulate a lot of dirt hahaha :P and thanks!
