Idle vibration almost gone

Had dealer install redline MT 90 in trany and 75W90 in diff.
1 The vibration at idel, in the shifter, is almost gone, much better than B4 change. :D
2 The shifting is less notchy. :D
I would sugest waiting at least several thousand miles to get this done so breakin wear is completed.

my dealer wants $80 to change the fluids in tranny/diff. A local car shop wanted $60.

I'm waiting till 5k miles before I do the change.

could someone expand on this a little for me? What is it you are changing and what is it about changing it that makes it a good idea

for the diff and transmission, all you do is open up a screw, the liquids drip out, then you pour in new fluids, and you're done. That's why I don't really care for $80 fee my dealership wants. I'd be far more confortable with $40 range.

You can do it at home, but you'd need to get the car up so you can work under it, and be able to pour in the fluids - sideways. Which can be hard if you don't have a way to pour it in

Still, it's not a job that will take a full hour of someone's time. They would set it up, do something else, then pour in new fluids. Take 30 mins tops.

Did this cure the vibration you feel at idle every few seconds through say the drivers seat?

My dealer did it for $45 and I supplied the fluids ( 2 Qts. of each). The Service Manager did say only for "their" customers in case some of you figure out who my dealer is. Total cost $82.
There is a very good DIY on this, I'm just to lazy.

They are talking about changing the transmission and differential fluids - to synthetic. I like the Royal Purple stuff.

The why is as follows:
a) During breakin the gears "machine" themselves resulting in metal shavings in the oil. Changing it gets rid of most of this.
b) Using synthetic results in lower operating temps, better mileage, better shifting, perhaps even longer life - all due to lower friction.

Some caveats if you decide to do this yourself.
1. Find some kind of pump to get the fluid up into the fill hole (it's thick and smelly, so that's a warning - it's not fun to change).
2. Always remove the filler plug first, mainly to ensure you can before you drain the fluid out. Several posters ended up stranded because they couldn't refill because they couldn't get the filler plug out.
3. Be sure to use jackstands if you can't use a lift.
4. Make sure you properly dispose of the used fluid - it's obnoxious.
5. If you have an automatic, you can still do this (there is, for example, Mobil 1 automatic fluid). I would suggest having the dealer do the auto, however.

yes 2 k is a good point.. BTW they make pump bottles that you can fill with your gear oil to pump the stuff back in .. just go to a auto parts store and geta pump bottle

and yes the stuff smells very badly.. get it on your cloths and you will never wash out the smell.. drain it in to a oil drain pan .. and then recycle that stuff..

There is? Where, please? Or are you suggesting it would be a good idea for someone to DO a DIY in this topic?

Great info, David!

I don't suppose some kind soul would be willing to take a pic or two of both the tranny and differential fill plugs, and the drain plug (diff) or access panel on the tranny where fluids should be drained from? If so, I may just tackle this, and do a DIY on it while I'm at it.

Also, where's a good place to get Royal Purple fluids, anyone?

Omicron you are right. I don't see a DIY now but I know there was a good one with pictures and it even talked about the fact that the oil plugs were 24 mm ( =15/16 ) with some oil plugs being 23 mm ( one of mine ). There was also a discussion of redline vs royal purple. Maybe it was not in the DIY thread?

Now that is so useful I'm going to stick it in a DIY so that people can find it!

In Fort Lauderdale, you can get RP stuff at Speed and Truck World. I don't know if that's a nationwide chain or not, however. If you go to the Royal Purple web site you can see local and online dealers. I personally have had a pretty good experience buying the stuff on Ebay, believe it or not.

I don't think you can go wrong with either company's fluids. I picked RP based on a number of testimonials from various people, but I've never heard of anyone having issues with either one.
