Angry I need a new engine, Mazda wants proof of oil changes

Hi all,

So my car started to bog down, lack of power, stalling, very poor idle.

Mazda changed the IAC as that was the code that was spit out (this was covered under my warranty/extended warranty).

They then do a compression check, and it points to a new engine.

Mazda now wants proof of oil changes. I bought the car used from another Mazda dealer with roughly 24,000KM on it. I believe it was a demo, so they should have all the records for it.

I know I did (1) oil change, but I do not have proof, however the dealer that it is at now did the last 4 changes, all within normal intervals.

My service rep is saying it could get denied because my car should have had 8 oil changes in its' life, I can only account for about 6 of them!

Car has 75,000KMs, and has never had any major issues, but has had all Service Bulletins done as needed (engine mounts, upgraded battery/starter...).

Any thoughts, or advice?

You only have to account for the maintenance for your time of ownership...

Thank you for the responses guys, much appreciated!

rodjonathan, you got PM.

I guess what I am also asking, is it reasonable, that with this dealer doing the last 4 changes, all within spec, that my warranty would be void because I cannot account for an oil change that should have happened 2.5 years ago, or so?

So my dealer is saying it does not look too good if I cannot find a receipt for purchasing oil in the last 2 years.

I argued that what does that prove if the last 4 changes were done by the book? Is it reasonable that a potentially missed oil change 2.5 years ago caused the engine to fail today??

With all the B.S. of dying motors due to oil issues, you'd think Mazda would not be so picky in a case like this. They have proof of the last 4, like WTF?

Can someone get me the MNAO number please? I called and it pointed me to a local 416 #, only to find it is not in service.

Gheesh!

Mazda has agreed to do the engine swap, and they cover all engine components.

Is there anything I should be prepared for when all is said and done?

Any hidden costs? Break-in period for my new engine?

Will the odometer be reset to 0?

Thanks everyone!

odo wont be reset but the car will feel like brand new follow standard break in procedure and the dealer might charge you for plugs and wires and coils and anything else they can make sure u actually need the stuff before letting them change it

congrats on the new engine.
If you go to racingbeat's website, they have a break in procedure.

Thank you all. I just hope they don't get me on some miscellaneous parts that might be needed!

Yeah probably a good idea to do plugs, wires, and coils just to start fresh.

glad to hear they agreed to give you an engine.
Make sure you break it in properly and dont' let them sucker you into a bunch of stuff you don't need.

Got my car back today. New engine feels great, and it idles like it should.

Did not cost me anything either, so I'm happy about that!

Cheers

If there is oil in the engine, then you did your scheduled maintenance.

Most RX-8s would be completely bone-dry by the time you got to the 3mo/3000mi service interval.

That should be proof enough!

My new '09 seems to inhale just about 1.25 qts. every 2000 miles.

I asked the service manager about breakin, and he said don't take it above 100KM/h, and don't gun it.

I thought the first part was odd. Why would that be damaging? Especially if it is at a low RPM? Shouldn't RPM be more an issue during breakin than MPH?

Anyway, I'll take it easy and gradually ramp up the RPMs. It certainly feels good to have it back. I was not sure how much I missed it until I had her back

The techs certainly made everything dirty though. Anything black under the hood was now finger-print covered, and dirty....arrgghh!

Oh, and I supplied them the original air intake (I replaced it with a K&N Typhoon 2), and they said they were going to put it on and make it factory again, well lo and behold, they put the K&N back on....hmmm
